Lynley

It was watchable but nothing like the characters in the books.
I did however stop reading the series after several books as Elizabeth George's dialogue with Havers became irritating. We could take her accent and dropped aitches as read without having it spelled out constantly.
Nathaniel Parker was excellent as Lynley.

The only thing I recognised was the name

I didn’t get far in. Then switched off. Same old same old rehashed scenario of “posh, higher educated, handsome, outsider joins investigation and is paired with not so “posh” or educated or handsome local. Just banal. No subtlety. 🫤

I really enjoyed the new series.

I am underwhelmed. It's new to me as I didn't watch the Nathaniel Parker version. It seems to be limping along with a weak script, and I am only watching it because I'm not well and most TV seems dire at the moment so there's nothing else (apart from the brilliant Traitors, of course!)

I've not read the books, but I did watch. and enjoy the previous version. I'm treating this one as something to watch if there's nothing else on.

I had a treat tonight as Sky Arts were showing a 1981 version of Agatha Christie's Seven Dials Mystery. Not only did it have a cast that included John Gielgud, but it stuck closely to the story. The murderer didn't turn out to be somebody else and nobody was suddenly revealed to be a lesbian. So unlike the current "re imaginings" the BBC keep foisting on us.

I really enjoyed the new series.

The last one - Epi 4 -highly recommended if you just want to try one- dramatic and effective plot.

If you haven't seen them, Inspector George Gently and Foyle's War are both on Netflix and ITVX. They are both so good.

Think the original with Joan Hickson kept close to book, the later version was a total re-write of the plot, just kept some of the characters in it names the same. Not sure why this was done. Much preferred the earlier one.

Michael Kitchin is fantastic as Foyle Chestnut brilliantly understated. I agree about George Gently as well both dramas so much better than Lynley.

I have no idea why production companies choose to do this. I think it is a lazy way of doing something. They could write their own story and not hang it on the back of a known story which makes people want to watch it rather more than they would the unknown.

I do so agree with you ! I don't think anyone has surpassed Joan Hickson as Miss Marple . I'm sure it's not only because she looked so like my lovely maternal grandmother - especially the voice , hat and hairstyle .

It was slated on Must Watch but they then went on to say how good Patience is on Ch4 so I’m going to give that a go even though I don’t usually watch detective stuff.

Not impressed with the new Lynley either.

You might want to watch the first series of Patience MayBee, I think it helps to understand her story. It was streaming on 4. It is good.

Patience has been an amazing program. I have loved it although I was waxing lyrical about how not all ASD sufferers react the same to certain triggers or need headphones, backpacks, etc. However, they did address that so I was appeased!

Thanks for those recommendations Chestnut. I've actually watched all the Foyles but never the George Gently, so I started that this afternoon and am loving it.

I was watching this week's Lynley when I suddenly realised he was driving a Jensen Interceptor! No wonder it has such an old number plate. What a brilliant car though, and in such beautiful condition! Years ago I knew someone whose boyfriend had got one, but I never got a ride in it.

I haven’t read the books.

I watched snippets of the old series, but found Sharon Small’s accent and mannerisms so off putting that I never got into it.

I thought the second episode of the new series was better than the first.

Seeing as I have no mental pictures of the characters from the books has helped.

The original TV Lynley drove a Bristol. A real connoisseur's car. Very classy.

We watched all the episodes and enjoyed them.
If you get past comparing with the previous characters and storylines, it is a pleasant way to pass an evening.

I watched the first one last night. I have read some of the books but find them over written and Elizabeth George’s take on England/class a bit irritating.

I enjoyed the new Lynsey, set in Norfolk not London. I agree with Marydoll, the new Lynsey is easy on the eye. I’m interested in the new Haver’s background, a different take on a young dc.

I have watched the first two, easy watching, I am warming to this version.

As an aside absolutely love Lynley’s house and car.
