I watched this last night and rather enjoyed it. As a clergy widow I recognised much of parish life in the storyline. I wasn't expecting to like this drama but I'm very much looking forward to the next episode.

I didn’t enjoy the first episode- so won’t be watching any more.

Admittedly I wasn’t watching it on my own TV but I found the screen too dark to make out what was happening after dark.

mokryna

I enjoyed watching it. A cosy mystery that isn’t violent.

Apart from someone having his throat slit in the church, resulting in blood everywhere!!

Sorry … tried hard to follow it but really lost the plot! Was it just me?

Treebee Thu 09-Oct-25 19:08:45

I found the book tedious but enjoyed this first episode.

I always found Richard Coles entertaining on
Radio 4 on Saturday mornings and looked forward to reading “Death Before Evensong “but it was SO boring and plodding, I actually gave up!
With good editing and/or script writing I hoped the tv version might be an improvement but the jury is out.

Nor me Allira. I thought he played the part well.

Allira Thu 09-Oct-25 18:29:48

I don't think I've come across Matthew Lewis before.

Debbi58 Thu 09-Oct-25 18:25:48

Forgot that was starting, I'll watch it on My5 , free view catch up channel.

Calendargirl Thu 09-Oct-25 17:42:16

6 episodes I think.

ElaineI Thu 09-Oct-25 16:44:17

I enjoyed it too. I haven't read the book but probably will now. I wasn't expecting it to carry on as I thought it was one that had the whole story in one episode however makes it more interesting I think.

I didn’t like the book much but quite enjoyed the tv programme. Will stick with it.

Greenfinch Thu 09-Oct-25 16:25:04

Thanks for the recommendation Aldom. I will retrieve in on catch up as it sounds as if most Gransnetters enjoyed it. We missed it because we were on another channel watching Chris Packham.

Loved the books and am enjoying this. Must look out for Rev Coles in another cameo role. Missed this one

Gfplux Thu 09-Oct-25 16:07:52

I was surprised to find I liked it. A little in the mood of Midsummer .

Sueinkent Thu 09-Oct-25 16:04:05

I enjoyed it. Right up my street.

Grandma2002 Thu 09-Oct-25 15:47:36

I enjoyed it and liked the long suffering vicar who did not actually give way to the domineering mother . Looking forward to further episodes.

Astitchintime Thu 09-Oct-25 15:36:42

We watched this on demand yesterday afternoon but find the night time scenes very, very dark and difficult to make out any detail.

Blinko Thu 09-Oct-25 15:34:57

Without having read the book, I think it’s her what done it…..

Allira Thu 09-Oct-25 14:39:26

Mojack26

Live Amanda Redman but not in this role.

I don't think you're supposed to like her 😁

Live Amanda Redman but not in this role.

Yes, I enjoyed the first episode, too. An easy watch.
I liked the book, as well.

Lell Thu 09-Oct-25 13:52:02

I loved the book and really enjoyed the tele programme. A bit of a cosy crime really. Thought the characterisation on the programme was as authentic as the book

I quite enjoyed Murder before Evensong, but it’s not very original. Echoes of Poirot, Midsomer Murders, Miss Marple, etc.
Did anyone else think that some of the costumes were rather old-fashioned for 1988? 🤔 I did notice a child wearing a shell suit (I had a couple of those - very comfy!) but some of the adult clothes were more reminiscent of the 50s/60s. My Mum would have been around the same age as Amanda Redman’s character, but she didn’t dress like that!
