BBC 2 classic films on Saturdays

I've just finished watching the Batman films. Much to my surprise I throughly enjoyed them. Spurred on after watching Pennyworth on ITVX as I hadn't realised the connection to Micheal Caine who is in the films as Batman's butler!!!

I’ve just seen that there is an Irish film called That They May Face the Rising Sun on catchup. I’ve never heard of it but it’s quite recent and has won awards. Emma is on catchup, too. One of my favourite films of recent years.

I watched That They May Face the Rising Sun the other night. One of those sweet films in which not an awful lot happens but is still pleasant viewing. Bit like the other Irish film I saw recently about the young girl.These films do make me long to go back to Ireland, though.

Didn't see Odette but have seen watched it many times but did see Dr Z. Both great films

Thanks for the info. definitely will be looking to see what is on there. Dont watch a lot of films but watch out for things that appeal. Around chrismas time, when I used to be very busy with rehearsals and concerts etc and the usual christmas rush around, my husband and I used to really enjoy a few old favourites which nearly always were on the box. So they ranged from (To me the best) the old Railway Children where Jenny agutter was bobby . Then of course we had to watch Ceila Johnson and Trevor Howard in Brief Encounters, and sometimes Humprey Boghart in either Casablanca, or the one where he is trying to get a boat down the river. Forgotten its name.Any of that sort of thing was very relaxing and of course some really good actors in them. I have been to see a quality opera production at the cinema, which was very good as only keen opera buffs were there and there was no rustling of sweets and eating and messing with phones!! Nowadays I prefer to wait for it to come on the tv as the whole cinema things is spoilt by the noisy annoying people who cant seem to last 5 minutes without eating something!! So it will be a very well behaved audience (me!) who will be watching from my own comfortable chair. Thanks

It looks as though BBC2 are going to have a flood of new viewers come Saturday! I shall certainly be taking a look myself. Watching old films is refreshing in these modern times when so much has become vulgar and virtue signalling.

Was the film called The Quiet Girl. I really enjoyed that as well. It was in gaelic with subtitles. A lovely change to watch a film without the usual sex, swearing, and violence.

I looked yesterday and neither of the films was familiar; one was made in 2022. A disappointment.

Yes HippyChick it was( The Quiet Girl ) and I really enjoyed it too.The first one I found tedious and didn’t really get into it.

I do have a lot of old films on my iPlayer watchlist to catch up with, but I have been looking for a long time for what is possibly my favourite B&W film - the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda with Ronald Coleman, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, David Niven and that old Hollywood stalwart, C. Aubrey Smith. I remember curling up on the sofa with my dad and watching it on TV. Dashing, stiff upper lipped goodies, dastardly baddies, a doomed romance, and a rollicking sword fight at the end! I found it not on BBC but on You Tube yesterday. It made yet another very wet afternoon easier to bear!

If you liked The Quiet Girl ( which I loved) , look out for Small Things Like These.

It is also set in Ireland but in the 1980’s and it is the difficulties face in small town Ireland at the time.

Not an easy watch but very good and thought provoking.

BBC 2 and Film 4 are my go to stations for watching old, but classic films. Film 4 do have plenty of westerns and war films, if that's your thing, but also have plenty of British comedies from the black and white era, Charles Dickens adaptations and historical films. Quite often, when there's some tedious sport on the two main channels, I enjoy watching an old film on BBC2.

I’m just watching Passport to Pimlico. A classic Ealing comedy. It’s so ridiculous it’s too daft to laugh at! But it’s better than football … 😂
