He says today in the Telegraph:
“ There is the opportunity to make the subject look ridiculous, which has never been particularly difficult in my case anyway. I also have memories of William Hague’s effort when he was party leader and went down a water slide in a baseball cap.
However, I was persuaded that a series, as opposed to a one-off, would not work as a hatchet job. Viewers would get the point in the first episode and would only watch the rest of the series if they had some empathy with the family. This does not mean that there is no risk, but it is to some extent ameliorated. At least it is not the jungle.”
