What did you think about Murder in Provence?

New drama series last night. I quiet enjoyed its setting in France. In the beginning I half expected Endeavor to pop up but that soon left me when I got involved in the story.

Aveline

My Dad had Citroen DSs when I was young. Us children hated them. The suspension was so wallowy that we felt car sick the whole time in them.

Was it one of those that went up like a hovercraft when the engine was switched on Aveline?
I'm surprised any driver could see beyond the bonnet.

I was thinking what a nice job it would be to be the props buyer for the drama .......... oysters, wine, and renting that beautiful old Citroën DS.

Nice scenery and clothes and that's about it!

Of course the leading man is 20 years older than the leading lady, and only seven years younger than the mother!

I suppose it's too much to expect Patricia Hodge to be cast as his squeeze!

I'm with you sodapop. Shows like Father Brown and Sister Boniface are much better acted and have better pace as they're not tediously drawn out over two hours. I can't understand why these shows are on in the afternoon and Murder in Provence is deemed worthy of Sunday nights.

We've recently been watching old episodes of Blue Murder which puts this dull drivel in the shade.

I think I spotted Roger Allam’s name as one of the executive directors, or similar.

Probably gets paid for acting and directing.

Absolutely dreadful. I expected something better from Roger Allam. It was nothing like as good as Father Brown or other series shown in the afternoon.
Seems to be the collective opinion of my friends as well.

We've been watching a fair amount of "gritty" stuff recently and found this to be an enjoyably light couple of hours' worth of eye-candy tv. I love the banter, the clothes, that delightful looking bistro ... works for me as a gentle antidote to the horrors of The Pembrokeshire Murders and Little Boy Blue etc.

but I don’t think they look like a proper couple at all

No, they don't, do they.

And as for her investigating a case in which she had a personal involvement - words (nearly!) fail me.

I thought it was nowhere near French enough and I kept expecting Father Brown and Mrs McCarthy to come in! I too kept looking at the colour of the liquid in the glass wondering what they were drinking - completely the wrong colour for Rosé.
Will watch to see if it improves or gels better but I don’t think they look like a proper couple at all. Disappointing really.

Gave up on it. Thought it was awful, after expecting it to be great because of Roger Allam.

Callistemon21 Mon 25-Jul-22 10:51:16

Did anyone recognise Keala Settle from The Greatest Showman?

And she is American.

Nice scenery but the English actors playing French people is hard to stomach and the plot is akin to Midsomer Murders . I won’t continue to watch.

But having French actors speaking English with French accents would be rather ridiculous - they are supposed to be locals, not foreigners with accents.

Callistemon, ditto to Allam for Maigret! Perfect.
I’ve just read a couple of Maigrets on my Kindle - now wondering whether the old B&W TV series is available anywhere - with that memorably haunting signature tune.
Netflix hardly ever seems to have anything I want to watch but I’ll try anyway.

By the time we had enjoyed the scenery and remembered past holidays and I had enjoyed all the different clothes, I wasn't to
bothered about the actual storyline.
We did wonder if it was a slow boiler which quite often happens with these new series, a wonderful set of actors so it should work.

dragonfly46 Mon 25-Jul-22 09:33:18

I too found it wooden but loved the clothes and the scenery!

Yammy Mon 25-Jul-22 09:22:45

I kept expecting Brian Rix or June? of Terry and June to pop up. At first, I thought it was a farce or a spoof.
The woman's clothes kept my attention and yes she does need a good bra maybe a padded one we used to call K2,s as teenager geographers.
Yet in the end, I had not switched it off and it was easy watching on a Sunday evening. Did I spot Patricia Hodge as the mother-in-law?confused

Finally , I managed to stay awake through the dullest detective story ever devised .

The ingredients are all there -La Belle France , utterly gorgeous Roger Allam and demure Nancy Carroll , who seems to play these sorts of roles .

I spent the entire programme adoring and lusting after her wardrobe .

First of all , it was that green shirtwaister dress then , the black and the sleeveless yellow - apart from her stunning array of nightwear .
She has a wonderful figure , but needs to wear something enhancing in the bra department .

lovey-dovey-ness between he and his wife tiresome
they are not married

bevisp1 Mon 25-Jul-22 07:41:41

Scenery was good, but otherwise rubbish.

eazybee Mon 25-Jul-22 07:04:10

Watched last night and found it very pretty but bland. Roger Allam is wasted so far, and I find the lovey-dovey-ness between he and his wife tiresome. The acerbic Patricia Hodge should be given more to do, and I felt the unfortunate Cosette brought some much needed life to the acting.

Calendargirl Mon 25-Jul-22 06:43:15

Once again I fell asleep well before the end, so just like last week’s, I still don’t know ‘who dunnit’.

Think I managed to remain awake until the second brother was found dead at the swimming pool.

And when I woke up just at the end, they were saying “Poor Cosette” so assume she died as well?

Will have to re-watch the last hour.

They all seem to dislike their mothers!

Eat least with Midsummer after two hours I knew who had done it.

mokryna Sun 24-Jul-22 23:38:44

The amount of deaths reminds me of midsummer murders…
