Meatloaf has died!

Paradise by the Dashboard Light is the track my daughters and I (and their friends!) used to regularly sing together while making Sunday lunch or having drinks in the garden.

It tells a brilliant story - as did most of his (and Jim Steinman's) music. Rock opera at it's best!!

I can't imagine listening to that kind of music with my children, particularly Dashboard Lights. Don't get it.

You’re probably right, my memory can’t recall exactly.

When I was 17 I lived in a small town and BOOH was about people escaping from small towns. It had serious parts for women. It was the seventies, maybe we were yokels, but there you go.

Meat Loaf was mad as a cut snake and nobody thought he was Ozzy Osborne or David Gilmour. It was rock opera. It was over the top.

DH, whom I knew when I was 17, was into Led Zep, Tangerine, Pink Floyd, that kind of thing. Dragged him along to see Mr Loaf about 10 years ago and he loved it. Because he got it. He knew what was going on. Nothing beats 20,000 people shouting I bet you say that to all the boys at the tops of their voices, in unison!

We took 18 year old DD3 and were sitting a long way back but, in the block in front of us, a very tipsy drunk woman stood on her seat and performed the whole concert facing us. She must have seen it lots!

It is a lovely memory all round.

Thanks, I’ve been trying to remember when it was for ages! I think everyone in the audience sang along! A very noisy concert!

Soundtrack to our lives too. Cant say how many copies of BOOH we had between us. Vinyl. Cassette. CD Two in house. One in each car. Several “ replacements “ Happy days. Saw him live just once with then 12 year old son (20 +years ago) who loved the music. TBH he was shambolic. Wandering round stage, forgetting words, missing cues, using every expletive known to most of us. We came away disappointed. Did it alter our feelings towards him or his music? NOOOOOOOO! Its rock n roll!! The music will live on and has given us great times and great memories …… . “ I bet you say that to all the boys” … ? ? ?.??. RIP Meatloaf.

Not rock n roll as you think just not up to the job. Music sounds dated and has No legs. One hit wonder basically strung it out far too long , mate of mine did similar taking her 13 year old daughter to share her teen dream, result? Daughter hated it couldn't see why she'd taken her and was mystified as her mum had banged on about how good he was and she thought it a load of old rubbish (at13!!)

His popularity is a complete mystery I must say?! My friend who's 15 years my junior has banged on an on about bat outa hell and it simply sounds like the same as every other one of his fast tracks!! The same baseline same beat same instruments same arrangements differing speeds but generally the same song repeated again and again! As for being rock n roll ? Not really, it has a place in the psyche of certain types who maybe didn't 'get' the real rockers by way of being either too young or not visiting real rock venues either. Concerts in venues like Warwick castle were for us true rockers for those playing at it. i've found over the years that those who heard meatloaf at school discos bought into the pseudo 'rocker' image and got stuck in his groove missed the boat on led zep/acdc/black Sabbath/wishbone ash et al. And thought the time warp the ultimate rock dance!? The best song he had was with Cher she carried him all the way through it!

Sad news . Never liked his music maybe I fell between the generations? They are saying covid the culprit and that he was anti vax and mask? Sad if this really is the case unnecessary for a much loved guy.

I don’t think he was anti-vax or mask. I’ve seen posts from him where he was telling people to get jabs and protect themselves. He was anti-mandatory jabs and masks, though. I know Americans like that. Fully jabbed but don’t agree with being forced into it.

I also read that he died at home which suggests to me he chose not to have intensive treatment.

He sang and performed with such passion. A unique comic/tragic performer, a real showman and a brilliant operatic, theatrical Rocker. RIP Meat Loaf. You will Rock forever. With Love x. “Not a Dry Eye in the House”.

Sad news. Such a wonderful voice and Bat out of Hell will always be a favourite of mine.
We never did get to see him perform as the one time we booked, the concert was cancelled due to his ill health.

Don’t know anyone who didn’t like him and his music. My kids grew up listening to his music as it was always on when I was doing the housework and in the car.

Not really my music or performer but I think he appeared on TV in a programme Pop Star to Opera Star as one of the judges. Must admit I thought he did a good job at that and was quite funny! (That's if my memory is not playing tricks!!)
