Detective set in Brighton based on books by Peter James, starting 14 March 8pm ITV. I like the books but John Simm is not my idea of Grace.

It was absolutely rubbish.

Not a good quality watch. I’m definitely looking forward to Line of Duty though as I’m sure that won’t disappoint.

PinkSweetPea Mon 15-Mar-21 13:56:20

I enjoyed it, a bit gruesome in parts. Did not realise it was based on a book

I was so disappointed in last night's programme. It was slow and a touch boring. John Simm is not my idea of Roy Grace. Definitely one to miss.

OK but because it was written by Russell Lewis, who created and wrote Endeavour, I expected great things. Not on a par to Endeavour.

Will watch the next one though. Too right Oldbat1 Line of Duty won't disappoint.

Began well but then I agree, it was so far fetched and farce like it was almost a parody. I still enjoyed it though (apart from the gruesome bits).

He seemed quite stupid to me. From the off you could tell she was as false as a 9 Bob note.

Peter James the author of these books says he is delighted with this programme . I thought he looked the part having read all the books . Not a patch on Unforgotten though .

I love Roy Grace books and have always visualised him in a certain way, so I googled John Sim and am very disappointed to see who they have chosen to portray Roy!

Alima Tue 16-Mar-21 04:39:09

I loved the Roy Grace novels, well written, wonderful setting, a strong and likeable pool of characters. Up until the last few novels that is when it seems Peter James started churning the books out to keep the publisher happy.
As for the TV adaptation, John Simm played Roy Grace well I thought. Do agree that the actual storyline was rather far-fetched, maybe because they had to cram it into a couple of hours. It was something else entirely that had me thinking “this isn’t right” but would have to read-read the book to prove my theory and not sure I want to that that. Will probably watch the next one.

I'm finding it very boring. I love a feature length episode of detective series generally but think I'll just delete this.

Auntieflo Tue 16-Mar-21 15:38:36

I have only read one of Peter James books with Roy Grace as the lead character, and must admit only finishing it to see how it would pan out.

We watched the Grace programme, and I don't think I would bother with any others. Partly because of the supporting actors
and daft story line.

I’ve never read the books, so had no preconceived ideas. Had to fast-forward the coffin scenes though, as I’m claustrophobic and I was almost sick!

TerriBull Tue 16-Mar-21 17:21:16

Regarding the coffin scenes, I remember feeling as you did Squiffy when I read that book, it gave me instant claustrophobia, the descriptions of being enclosed in the coffin I found particularly horrifying.

I have read all the Peter James Grace books - I think the earlier ones are better than the more recent ones. I was really disappointed with the casting of John Simm; not that he's not a good actor, just that he's not at all how I visualised Grace. Having said that, I did think the acting was a bit wooden throughout, there seemed no excitement or passion from anyone! The book was much better.

We actually enjoyed this, though yes, I preferred the book, as is usually the case. I thought John Simm made a good Grace. It seemed rushed though, and I feel it would have benefitted from being shown over three or four hours. Still, better that than the current trend of dragging a story out very thinly over eight or ten hours.

I quite enjoyed this but I’m waiting patiently for a new series of Shetland to be made. Anyone know if there is one in the pipeline.

Aveline Wed 17-Mar-21 22:05:53

I heard there was a new Shetland being made.

We watched Grace last night and have read a lot of the books, for some reason I thought it was a series of programmes rather than a one off. Thought it was watchable, as there’s so little else going on any TV that’s new is a novelty.

Exactly how I felt about it curlywhirly I also agree about the earlier books being much better.

Watching on catchup, so no subtitles! Hard to decipher dialogue! ?

muse Sat 20-Mar-21 21:16:38

Aveline

I heard there was a new Shetland being made.

Series 6 should be on later this year. There's also a series 7. Radio Times says they are filming the series back to back.

Good to see Jimmy Perez and Tosh back smile

Great news muse!

Hellogirl1 Sun 21-Mar-21 00:32:35

It was OK, but hving read all the books, I think I prefer reading.

Rosalyn69 Mon 22-Mar-21 07:02:46

I watched episode 1 last night and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to episode 2.
I haven’t read the books.
