Elvis was apparently very much opposed to illegal drugs but saw nothing wrong in taking very large quantities of legal ones. I believe that he took downers to help him sleep and uppers to wake himself up and give him the energy to keep going. Whether he truly believed it was fine because they were prescribed by a doctor, or whether he knew that he was kidding himself, we'll never know.

I always loved Elvis. I grew up with his music - my big sister adored him - and his films. I still think that he was the most beautiful man in the world.

I agree he was a beautiful man and yes , he died too young. But remember it was largely his fault with his many years of drug taking which ultimately caused his death.
A great shame that so many had the gift of a wonderful voice , it bought them came & fortune for them to go down the path of self destruct.

Hellsbelles we now know a lot more about prescription drug addiction. Back then Elvis like many others, was a victim of the "doctor knows best" culture when people took pills because "it must be okay because the doctor prescribed them to me".

I might be wrong, but I don't think Elvis took drugs for purely hedonistic reasons.

I loved Elvis in his early years, before he went in the army and the “Colonal” got hold of him and ruined his career. Those ghastly films and the Vegas years. I know he couldn’t be a rock n roller forever but he was completely sanitised by that grasping greedy manager.
Such a shame nobody stood up for Elvis and made him see sense. Too late now.

My description of Elvis in his heyday was sex on legs. Loved his looks,
his voice both speaking and singing and duly his character.

Lots of Elvis documentaries on different channels this Christmas. Sky Arts had some on last night.

Beautiful man with an amazing voice and charismatic personality so sad he died so young his music always lifts my mood

To me he will always be the best. He was totally gorgeous when he first appeared on the scene. I look back at old film footage and think just how very sexy he was, with an amazing voice that held such emotion.

He could act too, as anyone who saw him in "Flaming Star" would testify, but he was given rubbish "pop" films after that.

I don't want to see his decline but I'll watch until that point. I still remember the day he died and rushing upstairs to tell my husband after I heard it on the radio.

I've recorded Aloha from Hawaii. I,ve always been an Elvis fan and this was one of my favourite cassette tapes, which got lost at work. Now I can not only listen to it but see him perform as well, win win

Well, I watched it, I wish I hadn’t, I switched off when his decline was shown, It left me feeling sad.

I have made sure the children know all about Elvis. My grandsons know he's 'The King' and my 4 year old granddaughter simply loves 'Blue Hawaii'.

‘Always On My Mind’ is a particular favourite of mine.

Oh, yes, the voice. Can't Help Falling in Love is one of my favourites and the other is Suspicion.

Such a sad ending he had. I think his daughter looks a little like him. I believe he had native American ancestry.

Alone today, so I will watch the program on BBC 4 soon. Tonight on Sky Arts there are 3 programmes about Elvis, but I can’t bear to watch anything that shows his decline, it’s too hard to bear.

I agree about Elvis being beautiful. In my experience one doesn't come across many really beautiful men. I did once see a man getting on a train who was so beautiful it stopped me in my tracks. This one was tall, slim and fair haired. His eyes were his best feature, a piercing blue.

I have the DVD of his 1968 comeback concert in this black leather outfit. Wow.

How I agree. My sister loved him. I didn't notice him back in the '60s as I was so into The Beatles but now appreciate him. I saw a photo of him in a book once which was captioned 'Elvis looking more handsome than ten movie stars'. How true.
