Sir Ian Holm

He was a fantastic actor, brilliant in The madness of King George. The last photo of him taken, I think, in January, he looked very very ill poor man. RIP

I think Samantha Morton is his DIL.

I hope they show some of his performances on tv now, BlueBelle.
He was the kind of actor who was the part he played, perhaps that is why you haven't heard of him.
Some actors are never anything else but themselves.

He was very good in Chariots of Fire, and very funny as Napoleon in Time Bandits. Jessica Holme who does Crufts is his daughter.

I've seen him in many productions over the years and I'll always remember him as Puck.

The BBC production of The Borrowers was wonderful, perhaps they'll repeat it. He was such a good actor, was nominated for an Oscar for his part in Chariots of Fire and won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor in that part.

He was wonderful in the Madness of King George but, for me, he will always be Pod Clock. Obviously I never knew him but he seemed such an "unstarry" actor; no headline seeking announcements or obvious political bias that he drew attention to, just a very good actor.

I probably developed a crush on him when I was about 14 and saw him at Stratford, so he's someone I have taken note of ever since.

I loved him as Pod and Bilbo and various other roles, but hadn’t realised just how versatile he was until it was mentioned in the news last night.

I have to admit the name meant nothing to me when I heard the news on TV. Having listened to the article and realising who he was, I agree he was a fine actor.
Maybe the OP didn't get a quick response as others didn't recognise his name.

My DH commented on his death when we heard, he never usually mentions anyone famous who has died.
I’d forgotten that he was once married to Penelope Wilton, and was trying to get DH to remember Ever Decreasing Circles which she was in. Plus Downton of course.

Sorry, I seem to have digressed from poor Sir Ian, who I always found quite good looking.
