Last Tango in Halifax, new series.

Well I for one would not have wanted to put up two unknown strangers from NZ or anywhere else for that matter.
For those of you who are concerned Last Tango is running out of steam, this could have been the start of a whole new very dark storyline. Celia, Alan and Ted could have been done away with in the night by serial killer backpackers, giving Caroline an opportunity to reprise her Happy Valley policewoman role, as I think Sally Wainwright was the writer of that also.

I thought Calamity's real name was Jane, not Emily, hence Calamity Jane from the musical.

You certainly have to suspend disbelief to watch this series .

I think the giraffe plot line might be to turn the tables and make Gillian the rich sister, but at the same time, she will be at risk of getting caught for killing her ex-husband.

Oh dear, I have put up lots of people over the years, usually tagged on to the DC from their wanderings, not an elderly relative.

My family in Switzerland always hosted youngsters picked up as hitch-hikers - most of them British. My dad would have hesitated, but my mum spoke perfect English and loved the UK that she visited since whe was young (her and her father would visit Yorkshire to buy cloth for his textile factory) and studied there for 1 year too. Some stayed for 1 day, some for weeks. We still do with couch surfing and young musicians and their friends. Our trust has never been taken advantage of and we have met amazing people along the way.

I too agree sodapop the work colleague protesting so awkwardly was strange indeed. Maybe she is scared of her feelings because deep down she’s in denial about her own sexuality?

They seemed to be a pair of jolly young women and soon went off with the boys anyway.

That’s why I would have been suspicious of them, thinking they had an ulterior motive.

We thought they might have been drug smugglers as there was so much attention paid as to who was going to put the back packs in their car.

I forgot to watch the first episode of the new series, but soon caught up
I am pleased they are using the actual names of the place it is filmed as lived in Hebden Bridge when i was first married,
It brings back memories of the places,some good some not so good

Gillian's granddaughter is Emily-Jane, when telling Alan over the phone, Alan misheard this as Calamity-Jane, Calamity stuck.

One of the Mumsnetter's has posted that the BBC filmed the programme on her father's farm and that her father actually taught 'Gillian' to drive his tractor.
It make interesting reading re the animals used whilst filming etc.
She has also posted her own pictures of her dad's farm.

I have just spent the past few weeks ploughing through all 4 previous series. I'd missed them first time round. I really enjoy them. Characters very true to life in its infinite variety and the dialogue is spot on.
I hesitate to say it but Caroline's a big girl these days. From neat suits in series one to being draped in woollies in series 5. She fills them out too. Gillian always looks as though she could do with a good wash!

Does anyone know the location of that stretch of road they often drive along? The one in quite bleak countryside, just a wire fence at times and little in the way of anything man made.

You’re very brave Jane10 commenting on Caroline’s weight increase. I think Sarah Lancashire’s figure was brought up on another thread in the past,and the poster was accused of fat shaming.
I agree, she does look different to the earliest series.

I think I've noticed it more as I've just watched all 4 series in quick succession. She's still my favourite! Certainly come a long way from Corrie!

Yes Jane10 you are brave to post about Caroline (SL). You won’t be the only one to have noticed though!

I think that could be part of the story line.
In the trailer for next week.the woman she fancied .when telling her a few facts referred to the age gap and said, just look at yourself.
Cue, Caroline taking herself in hand by smartening herself up and slimming herself down.
I could be wrong of course.

Caroline’s misjudgement could have repercussions. A head teacher inviting a junior colleague round for dinner, plying her with alcohol & then making sexual overtures?

Yes, it was ill-judged; she made assumptions based on a chance remark and this could cause trouble.

I agree, JaneAinsworth. I felt that if Caroline had been a man, her behaviour would have seemed rather predatory.

I think this series was more enjoyable in the beginning but now too many story lines are being introduced. Sarah Lancashire is great as usual, but I think the actress who plays Gillian employs the same hangdog expression and oddly clipped way mid sentence of delivering her lines as she does in The Split which I find irritating.

I agree Greeneyedgirl although I do think she is a good actress, she does have a rather strange way of delivering her lines - as Gillian, I just thought it was her way of illustrating that Gillian was an overworked, stressed person. But, as she also does it in the Split, it is obviously just her way of speaking - it is a little irritating, her dialogue just doesn't seem to flow.
