Because it’s one of my all time favourite books, I still have a copy which was my dads, I knew I’d be crying from the start, I was right, take tissues.
Little Women was my read and read again book from about age 9. I loved it, loved the BBC serial we'd watch on Sunday tea time. I went to the film with that feeling of some trepidation, would they ruin my memories. A enjoyed it all. Great cast and beautiful filming. Sympathetic portrayal of the key themes. It reminded me how much this book opened my eyes to feminism, Jo was my role model. I agree, some of the time line was not always easy to follow but once I realised that, it worked well.
I am usually very critical of tv/films of classic books, so I went to this one feeling very cautious - and loved it. It plays fast and loose in its representations of the period; the girl's hair (no one would pay a penny for Jo's hair if it was as presented in the film), costumes, landscape etc are all less than accurate, but it gets the essence of the book absolutely right the relationships between the characters are right - and I will undoubtedly go and see it again and even buy the dvd.
