Such a talent! One of the working class lads who rose to fame in the 60s. He was a great actor and remained true to his roots. He refused a knighthood. RIP

A very different role he played one year at the Edinburgh Festival in the early 60s, was Luther, in John Osborne's play of that name. I think the play has sunk without trace, but I remember AF's performance as being convincing and powerful - and did you know that Luther suffered from constipation? No, neither did I!

Can't believe he was 82. Can't think of 82 as particularly old, either. That might be because I'm heading in that direction in another ten years...

Saturday night and Sunday Morning was a film that had changed a lot in a British cinema . I think that became the begining of what was called the Kitchen sink era in drama.

I remember him as a young man in Saturday Night And Sunday Morning and many years later in Erin Brokovitch and playing Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm. All very different roles which he carried off wonderfully. I was so impressed by his performance in The Gathering Storm that I bought the DVD.

I remember him in 'Tom Jones' when I was a schoolgirl. It was an X rated film but we all dressed up and pretended to be 18 to get in. We thought he was gorgeous.

There's another thread on Other Subjects. I often saw him on stage early in his career. Such a talent, he had a great career.
I feel very sad that he's no longer with us. When was Uncle Silas on? I must have missed it.
