Noisy audiences

The amount of whooping, yelling and whistling by TV audiences is really putting me off from watching some programs. I sit with the remote in my hand ready to turn the sound down when it is time for applause. I suspect that someone is in the background urging them on to make a much noise as possible. Hate it!!

Exactly JuneS. I was once at a recording of a tv show, and a man at the side gave the audience instructions about when to applaud. He had different hand signals for how much or little he wanted. This was back in the sixties, and everything is now much louder and rowdier.
I dislike shows like BGT or The X Factor because you can't actually hear the performance over all the cheering.

I can never understand the whooping and cheering that heralds Countdown which is, IMO, the most boring show on TV.

Well you could always write in and ask them to use jazz hands
Can’t say I ve noticed it much but maybe I m not watching the kind of programmes that clap a lot

I used to love to go to the theatre to watch musicals, but had to give up as I got too annoyed with the audience joining in with the singing.

Some theatres encouraged audience participation.

I resented having paid for a ticket, and not being able to listen to a trained singer giving their best performance, because they are drowned out by people singing along!

I maybe being unreasonable but it spoiled it for me.

I am with everyone else on this I hate whooping and cheering from the audience I too have noticed that it is now much louder and frequent than previously and wonder if it’s the US programme influences as they started to do this before it became a thing here in the U.K.? Whatever the reason it does irritate me and I won’t watch programmes where there are studio audiences now.

I like David Mitchell, but the hysterical laughter from the audience that greets every slight Shakespearean quip in his latest comedy series was awful, and I switched it off after a few minutes.

How strange Joanna as I have never noticed that ( Upstart Crow) and have watched the whole series.
What ‘barstaples’ to have put too much canned laughter in.
I shall have to watch it again now.

marydoll I agree with you, who wants to listen to tuneless singing next to you when you have paid to watch real singers.
