The best comedy I ever saw was Some Like it Hot with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. North by Northwest with Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. I liked the part with the crop spray aircraft best. As for a modern film, one that has everything. Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner, about a man who hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field in his corn. I could watch it every day.
The first film I remember having a great affect on me was "Carve Her Name With Pride". I think it was the beginning of my love of anything to do with WWII.
Imitation of Life, I`ll Cry Tomorrow Dark Victory Many, many musicals A film that always freaks me out it`s so creepy, but I always watch it when it`s on, is Night of the Hunter, an old black and white Robert Mitchum film.
High Society with Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Celeste Home. Who wants to be a millionaire, True Love, Well did you ever, what a swell party this is, etc. I must be just about word perfect, I’ve seen it so many times!
The black and white version of Jane Eyre.I think Elizabeth Taylor played the part of Jane and the whole film was much more atmospheric than the colour versions.
My favourite film of all time is Ben Hur, with Charlton Heston. I first saw it as a teenager on holiday in Bournemouth. I must have watched it hundreds of times. I am nearly word perfect.
The Producers 1968 directed by Mel Brooks with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel. Brilliant acting, really funny, unusual story, outrageous, and also strangely poignant. It was remade as a musical in 2007 with Matthew Broderick and amazingly I thought the remake was even funnier.
The current Alfred Hitchcock thread got me thinking about the old, classic films that relied soley on a good story, an excellent cast and very little, if anything in the way of "special effects". I'm a sucker for the old musical films like Philadelphia Story; Calamity Jane and The King & I. Do you have any favourite films? Which are they and why? And, if they've done a modern remake of it, did you rate it. I loved the original Double Jeopardy with Barbara Stanwyck but thought that the remake of it in 1999 was rubbish!
