Settled down to watch this tonight after looking forward to it for ages - I thought it was truly awful. What have I missed that made it so great?

MaryEliza you missed getting caught up in the hype! grin

NfkDumpling Thu 07-Jun-18 07:17:00

Oh, this was on my list of films to get from the library as we missed them. Should I think again?

gillybob Thu 07-Jun-18 07:28:46

I saw this at the cinema and thought it was brilliant maryeliza !

It just goes to show how we all have very different taste . smile

I went to see this film expecting not to enjoy it. It was the best film I have seen in ages.

NfkDumpling Thu 07-Jun-18 07:29:49

Confused now!

NfkDumpling Thu 07-Jun-18 07:31:14

The thing is - will DH like it, or will he humph and rattle the newspaper all the way through! Perhaps I should get it out now while the light evenings mean he can take himself off into the garden!

I don't enjoy many films at all but I really enjoyed 3billboards . It seems a little slow to start but then once you get into the story behind everything it's great.

gillybob Thu 07-Jun-18 07:45:02

My DH said it was one of the best films he has ever seen Nfk high praise indeed from someone who only ever says something is “alright”. Sorry you’re feeling confused I guess you’ll have to see it for yourself and make your own mind up.

Both DH and I really enjoyed it, and actually considered going again when it was on offer at the Senior Vue a few weeks later (not something we’d do often!).

MotherHubbard Thu 07-Jun-18 08:29:16

Thought it was a great film, DH enjoyed it too.

Hard to say more without spoiling but I enjoyed the first part and then it spiralled for me into the unbelievable. Wouldn’t want to live in Ebbing - pretty lawless place. The last film I was blown away by was Manchester-by-the-Sea if that gives any clue as to my tastes which, in this case are clearly out of kilter. That’s really why I posted because it had such acclaim - oh I also enjoyed Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool

I saw it an the cinema, hadn't known much about it before I went, other than it involved three billboards claiming the police weren't doing enough to catch a murderer.
Definitely not an easy watch, some scenes were shocking but I enjoyed all of it. I accept some of it spiralled into hard to believe but it entertained me.
The other film I enjoyed a lot recently was The Post. Understated but brilliant - what's not to like with Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks

Both Three Billboards and Manchester-by-the Sea are terrific films. Very different in style, yet so many of the themes running through them captured life when faced with terrible loss. Grief, anger, guilt, love and reconciliation.

Manchester-by-the-Sea is up there at the very top of my favourite films, along with The Lives of Others.

maryeliza54 Thu 07-Jun-18 10:57:19

That’s a really good point finn about life when faced with a terrible loss - I hadn’t thought about that aspect - I think because of the problems I had with other ‘events’ I sort of lost the big picture. The scene in M/S where the couple meet up ( I think she has her new child with her?) is the most heartbreakingly beautiful scene I’ve ever watched - although the last scene in Lives of Others when he buys the book in the bookshop and when asked who it’s for says’Das ist für mich’ is also very moving.
