Anyone else watch John Cleese in this tonight? I was looking forward to it but it was a little disappointing. DH thought it was dreadful. I'm hoping it will improve as we go along.

I totally agree with Washerwoman the Alison Steadman character really annoyed me. Just tell the son to go and rent somewhere, but then I guess there wouldn't be a story!

I shall see if it grows on me, Still Open all Hours got off to a slow start for me, but I shall miss it now. I was laughing out loud at Johnny Vegas in a dress trying to decide if he was a Delores or Susan. grin

Washerwoman Tue 20-Feb-18 12:57:54

I thought it would John Cleese that would annoying me but it was actually Alison Steadman.Recently her parts all seem the same, she was the weakest thing in that other retirement sit- com. Called Boomers I think? But on the whole we enjoyed that more than I think we will this. Will give it another go but Jason Watkins ,talented as he is,was so over the top as the son I'm not convinced it will improve.

Had high hopes but once again they were dashed.
Will watch one more to see if it improves but not very hopeful.

Gosh, I though 3rd Rock From The Sun was hilarious. Watched a bit of this programme in question and ?‍♀️ but my eleven year old GS thought the bit where he got stuck in the window was hilarious.

Oh I quite enjoyed it and feel it has potential-what's wrong with me? It made me laugh, well smile and there's not much that does that these days! I do always enjoy Alison Steadman.
Am enjoying watching 3rd Rock from the Sun I've recorded. Have seen it before but it always makes me laugh out loud.

I liked "Sorry".

Purpledaffodil Mon 19-Feb-18 13:50:47

“Language Timothy” said by the mother in Sorry when any vaguely off colour language was used is a family saying in PD Towers whenever grownup offspring let rip with expletives. It amuses DH and me but they probably have no idea about the reference! ?

Same here, J52 smile

J52 Mon 19-Feb-18 09:47:59

Ah Blinko thanks that was the Ronnie Corbett programme I was trying to remember. Didn’t watch it but occasionally saw snippets.

Blinko Mon 19-Feb-18 09:22:36

Oops, Corbett, of course...

Blinko Mon 19-Feb-18 09:22:04

Awful. Shades of Ronnie Cornett in 'Sorry', another turkey, imo. The irritating son should be sent packing asap if the show is to continue. I will not be watching, either way.

Nanabilly Mon 19-Feb-18 09:16:00

I switched it off as soon as the son came on the scene.
Can't abide John cheese in anything so I'm surprised I even gave it half a chance.

whitewave Mon 19-Feb-18 09:06:43

It is as if Cleese has forgotten how to act.

Auntieflo Mon 19-Feb-18 08:45:16

I thought it was terrible, bring back Still Open All Hours.

J52 Mon 19-Feb-18 08:28:52

I too was very disappointed. I thought it would be a cross between an older Gavin and Stacey, and Ronnie Corbett’s Mother (was that the programmes name?).
The son was awful in all aspects and in fact spoilt the programme. It started quite well with the banter between Alison and John.
Much better IMO will be the second series of MUM, BBC 2 this week. The first was really good.

Grandma70s Mon 19-Feb-18 07:27:28

I quite liked the idea of the son coming back to live with his parents assuming he’d be welcome when in fact he wasn’t. I suspect this quite often happens. I felt it got worse as it went on, though.. John Cleese OK, not keen on Alison Steadman, son looked too old.

I was very annoyed when she was apparently going to do the son’s washing! Surely nobody would be that stupid?

Purpledaffodil Mon 19-Feb-18 07:24:10

Disappointing I agree. Thought it was full of clichés and stereotypes. Perhaps it will improve? hmm

Jane10 Mon 19-Feb-18 07:04:32

I think John Cleese is, frankly, past it. His voice is most odd.
Alison Steadman is the best person in everything she appears in. Mind you she's always the same!

Eloethan Mon 19-Feb-18 00:21:51

I thought it wasn't great but it was OK. Sometimes these sit coms get better as they go on. I agree the son's character was irritating and over the top.

I wasn't that keen on the Jack Dee sit com Bad Move when it first started but I definitely warmed to it and hope there is another series.

pensionpat Sun 18-Feb-18 23:48:11

I never expect much from a comedy with lots of good actors in. So often the script lets them down. For me, Girlfriends fell into that category. And there was another big disappointment. Can't remember the title but was about 3 couples. Alison Steadman was in that too. And I think Russ Abbott.

GreatauntieLinda Sun 18-Feb-18 23:04:07

I loved it. Laughed loads.

ninathenana Sun 18-Feb-18 22:55:17

I've never liked John Cleese. The script was tosh and the son was annoying.
The only good thing about it was Alison Steadman

chocolatepudding Sun 18-Feb-18 22:51:21

Awful. We gave up after 20 minutes.
