I’ve started watching The State on more four catch up. Well at least I’m trying to watch it. It’s making me feel very uncomfortable. I’ve noticed lately that I’ve become quite sensitive to lots of films and television programs. I hide at the sight of blood and bodies in the like of silent witness and I jump out of my skin at the least little boo. Is it me? Is it my age? Or are thing we watch much more graphic than the used to be? I think I’ll have to go back to little house on the prairie, the Waltons and call the midwife at this rate. Anyone else feel the same ?boo

There are lots of things I have to stop watching nowadays because they become more violent or scary.

I don't watch TV to be upset.

I hardly watch the tv now for much the same reason.

Greyduster Fri 02-Feb-18 09:08:36

I’ve always been jittery about blood, gore and graphic violence, and am haunted by anything involving fire (The end of the Wicker Man haunted me for years!) but more so as I have become older. Reading about it I can cope with. I’ve read all the Game of Thrones books but absolutely refuse to watch the tv series. I would be a gibbering heap!

I had a similar thought the other day, only about DVDs! I was looking for a new film to watch on Saturday night, they all seem to be either zombies and monsters, graphic violence or childrens' cartoon characters. Nothing in between. Settled for re-watching my Death in Paradise box set (no graphic violence and simple mysteries!)

I can't bear watching anything violent. I've never liked it and am worse nowadays. I don't know whether things are more graphic but when I was young I didn't like it but could put up with it but now I just can't deal with it and can get nightmares. I'm glad I'm not alone. My family makes me feel as if I'm odd.

I hate graphic violence so avoid it, but love a good psychological thriller, either book or TV. Unless I’m in the house late at night on my own, when I stick to Ann Tyler and Call the Midwife.

I can honestly say I have never ever watched a "scary" film, whether ghosts, blood and gore, or psychological thriller. I just can't do it and can't understand why people like being scared. Can't read the books either.

I no longer watch violent films and I certainly wouldn't spend money to see a violent play [some I believe are quite graphic - even a ballet review I read recently sounded horrendous] but occasionally on some usually banal TV series I watch through my fingers as the tension increases - just in case!!!

I have always been a total wimp, where anything scary is concerned. I get furious whenever I hear someone talking about children's literature etc and say 'Children love being scared' I didn't, DS hated it and so does DGD and I am sure we are not alone.

The only television I watch at the moment is Amanda Butchart's 'A Stitch in Time'

merlotgran Fri 02-Feb-18 14:11:41

There must be something strange about me then because whenever I hear the announcer say a programme may contain scenes of a violent nature I perk up and say, 'Good O' grin

It just doesn't bother me.

I've never liked scary stuff, books, films or TV. I was one of the children hiding behind the sofa while my brother watched Dr Who.

Dh has watched Hard Sun on tv. I started watching but couldn't continue so I busied myself with crocheting, which I need to look at to do (unlike knitting!). If there was anything very gruesome my Dh gave me a warning - don't look up!

Juggernaut Fri 02-Feb-18 14:21:00

I don't like supernatural or horror stuff, but I'm fine with violence/blood and gore,
However, last night we watched 'Animals with Cameras' and I had to leave the room when the Meerkat's underground den was shown, I'm slightly claustrophobic (and getting worse as I age) and it absolutely terrified me! I went out into the garden and took deep breaths until DH told me it was 'safe' to go back!
The thought of being underground, in an small, enclosed area, or horror of horrors, on a submerged submarine, is more than this particular wimp can cope with!

I like the kind of spooky film with the rocking chair up in the attic, rocking all on its own. shock sometimes though, I find it all a bit much and have to quickly turn the tv over.

I've never watch horror or creepy sci-go shows. I do like old movies from the 1940s, mysteries, comedies, and game shows. My favorite new game show is Ellen DeGeneres' "Ellen's Game of Games." SO silly. Makes me laugh out loud every time, and it takes a lot for me to do that.

Orange123 Fri 02-Feb-18 16:03:03

...Sci-fi

varian Fri 02-Feb-18 16:14:33

I hate all representations of violence except maybe the Miss Marple type of "body in the library" which is never graphic.

I don't like war films except perhaps "the Great Escape" or "Where Eagles Dare". I don't want to watch "Saving Private Ryan" let alone anything described as "gritty"

The most awful scary drama though would be anything involving children where you see a cute little soul in the first scene and immediately think "victim". When you have cute little grandchildren, these scenarios are just too awful.

MissAdventure Fri 02-Feb-18 16:16:48

I enjoy real life hospital programmes. Some parts I can't always watch, but usually amazement at the things surgeons can do gets the better of me.

lemongrove Fri 02-Feb-18 16:26:43

Don’t watch Game Of Thrones or Brittania if you are of a nervous disposition!

I don’t like anything violent about children and never have, also don’t like zombie horror stuff.

Never watch any hospital drama or RL docu about operations either.

lemongrove Fri 02-Feb-18 16:27:35

The best things are chilling and no more.

Greyduster Fri 02-Feb-18 17:19:18

I had an idea when it was trailed that Brittania would be along the lines of GOT in terms of graphic content, lemon. Not for me then. Pity. I liked the idea of it.

I've never watched The Blair Witch project because I know it would stay with me forever and re emerge when I'm walking home late at night etc. Can't watch Poltergeist because it's about a child being taken, although I am part way through Stranger Things [have to stick with it to find out what happens]. I understand The Dark is even worse. Fine with Game of Thrones but hated the sado [sp]masochistic violence in Outlander; wish I'd never watched that. The Charlton Heston Omega Man stayed with me for years and I couldn't go into the garden after dark because of it. My kids think I'm silly being so scared by The Exorcist, which they just think of as being 'funny' shock. Didn't help that I once lived in a shared house next to some steps that were just like the ones in the film; and we did used to do séances when we were teenagers and weird things did happen. I can watch Alien, because I know I will never be alone in a spaceship. I can watch animals being killed as I realise the other animals have to eat [although I struggled with the one about the little octopus recently]. I'm never going to watch Tarka the Otter again and I think generations of children/adults have never got over seeing Bambi [sob].
