If anyone goes to see this film please let me know what you think of it. Has had rave reviews and people in the cinema were laughing their heads off. The S.O. both turned to each other at the end and said 'what on earth was that all about'. All I can assume is that our knowledge of Russian history meant we didn't get the jokes but surely one shouldn't need a degree in something to understand if it's funny or not?

I had high hopes for this film but I really didn't like it. It didn't seem to know what it was. A black comedy? / a documentary?
It just didn't work for me.

Thank goodness it wasn't just me then. I wasn't taken by the trailer I saw but the reviews were so good I thought I'd give it a go [and the cinema was packed; unusual for a Monday night]. One of the few occasions when I actually felt like leaving halfway through. At least it wasn't a long film.

There was a programme on BBC4 about the Russian revolution last night that I tried to watch as I thought I might understand this film more. However, it was late at night and I gave up; I will try again, though. Went to the cinema to see 'The Party' t'other night. Now, I'm not recommending this film because it was very very quirky [although I am glad that I went to see it]. But the reason I'm mentioning it is that, once again I was surrounded by people who were laughing their heads off. I did find it funny in parts, but not THAT funny. Beginning to worry about myself. Think I'm ok, though as I watched Upstart Crow on catchup last night and was tittering away, so perhaps a sense of humour transplant isn't necessary yet,..

Didn't go to the cinema to see it, bought a snide DVD.
Absolutely brilliant. A completely wonderful piss take, but you do have to have a good sense of humour to appreciate it.

What's a snide DVD?
I really disliked it. Far too bleak for me and not many laughs from the rest of the audience either.

Our local cinema don't have set runs for films now and pull a film if it isn't bringing in the crowds, but Death of Stain is still on confused. It reminded me of the bits in Monty Python that WEREN'T funny and, much as I loved Python there was a lot that was rubbish. I think a snide dvd is a pirate one that is illegal because, if everyone did that there wouldn't be a film industry. Saw Blade Runner tonight [bit too long and not as good as the original imo] and seeing The Killing of a Sacred Deer later in the week. Supposedly starts off as a black comedy and turns into a horror story#shouldbefun

We saw this film recently and enjoyed it. As it was in our lifetime we found it interesting as a bit of modern history. It wasn't what I would call funny, although there was a small group of people (who may have had a refreshment beforehand) who had obviously been told that it was funny. They were killing themselves laughing at a bit near the beginning where people were being rounded up by police (soldiers?), which I found chilling rather than funny. There were, however, some really funny bits, which I thought were done quite appropriately in a story about what was a very frightening regime. I have read reviews where the film was praised for not having the actors use fake Russian accents, and I would agree with that, even though it took a while to get used to their having very different accents (Kruschev (sp?) was American whereas most of the others were British).

Looking forward to Paddington 2 too! And I agree with you, Tegan2 about the dangers of "snide DVDs" to the film industry. That's the first time I've come across anyone who actually admits to buying one sad angry
