It was very enjoyable and well worth a late night.

Having watched Oklahama at the Proms earlier on, Glen Campbell's rendition of 'My Boy Bill' from Carousel was a lovely end to the evening.

A great musician and singer, also did a few acting roles.
Always thought he was much better than John Denver.

KatyK I have memories of car journeys, going on holiday, it was probably our favourite of the few tapes we had in those days - played on a loop with the DC joining in with Rhinestone Cowboy from the back seat.
In fact, I think we must have worn the tape out.

Never much of a country fan but love Phoenix and Linesman. Reminds me of a trip to Crete when I was a student! Little cafe on beach with a jukebox in Mallia. Tiny village in those days. What a talented man and what a sad end of life.

maryeliza Thank you so much for that information. I shall seek it out and re-listen.

Memories of long car journeys singing along to all his well known songs - wonderful. RIP Glen.

A snip from news:

It was an announcement that shocked the world of country music.

Four years ago one of the most famous singer-songwriters of all time announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and would be celebrating his illustrious music career with a final album and tour.

This tour, organised by Glen Campbell’s fourth wife Kim, turned into a protracted farewell from an artist who’d sold 50 million records in a career spanning six decades.

Initially planned at just five weeks it ended up lasting two years after Mrs Campbell insisted that performing the music that defined him was the best way for her ailing husband to retain an important therapeutic link with his past.

In all, Campbell performed 152 concerts during which his memory loss was increasingly apparent to the adoring audiences who packed stadiums in a bid to hear him perform such glorious hits as Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy for one last time.

But since last June, Campbell, 78, has been living in a care facility in Nashville after his wife of 32 years took the decision that round-the-clock care would best meet the needs of a man who is now in the final stages of Alzheimer’s

Her decision has led to a fight over control of Campbell’s affairs with two of the oldest of the star’s eight children (born to wives number one and two respectively)

Debby Campbell-Cloyd and Travis Campbell filed a petition in January alleging that Mrs Campbell is keeping their 78-year-old father “secluded from the rest of the family” and prohibiting the family “from participating in his care and/or treatment”

They are now asking the court to appoint a guardian to manage their father’s medical and financial interests

Campbell, whose last ever recording won the 2015 Grammy for best country song and was nominated for an Academy Award this year, is said to have lost the power of speech and now barely recognises his family.

You are right that he did not recognise his family towards the end (see my earlier post) as explained by his daughter Ashley at a recent concert we attended. There was a huge family fall out involving his current wife and family and previous wife and family which will undoubtedly be over money.

paddyann Wed 09-Aug-17 09:28:24

I believe he "didn't recognise his family" because of his dementia, not for any ffamily breakdown .My favourite track of his was his cover of the Bee Gees WORDS ,

Granny activist. For the same reason as you, I love(?) Elusive Dreams. I had it on an LP by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood.

Grannyknot Wed 09-Aug-17 09:02:17

This is a lovely rendition of Let It Be Me, must be his daughter singing with him:

Loved all his music, so many great memories. RIP Glenn.

Re Eloethan's post - that was in the wonderful R4 series Soul Music - all the programmes are archived so if anyone wants to, you can still listen to it. I love that series and often dip into the archive - huge range of music covered, not just pop.

Alima Wed 09-Aug-17 07:12:09

What a wonderful singer he was. Loved all his songs. RIP Glenn.

MawBroon Wed 09-Aug-17 07:11:58

DD3 had Wichita Lineman played very softly at her wedding in Stoke Newington Town Hall 5 years ago.
Why? We asked. Because we like it, they answered.
So a special place in my heart too.
His voice had a lovely quality.

Marydoll Wed 09-Aug-17 07:08:20

I still have his *Greatest Hits" LP up my loft. Nothing to play it on now.

Still playing his music in the car and for some reason, "Dreams of an everyday housewife" brings a tear to my eye.

kittylester Wed 09-Aug-17 06:39:44

I loved the duets with Bobby Gentry, ga.

Recently, I bought his latest Album and found 'Adios' really moving knowing he had Alzheimers. He had a really recognisable voice - smooth and tuneful.

I think 'by the time I get to Phoenix' is my favourite.

grannyactivist Wed 09-Aug-17 01:29:43

In the early 70's Glenn Campbell provided the musical soundtrack to my life. He recorded an LP with Bobbie Gentry that I used to play on repeat, one of the tracks was 'My Elusive Dreams' and sometimes the tears would fall as I listened to it. I had just lost a much wanted baby, my (then) husband was in the army serving in N. Ireland and I was alone in Germany so I used to have an occasional pity party.

Wichita Lineman is my favourite. A few years ago there was a programme on Radio 4 devoted to it - with people giving there recollections of what the song meant to them. It was really quite moving.

I took my dad to see Ashley Campbell and her brother Shannon in concert only a couple of weeks ago. She has all of her dads talent and an amazing voice. She spoke so beautifully about him although sadly she said that he no longer recognized them. Sad that there was a family rift at the end. Typical where there is money involved.

For some weird reason I loved Everyday housewife (not sure why as I have never been one) and by the time I get to Phoenix which always made me cry.

My dad and I chatted tonight and both agreed that he had lived 10 lives . RIP Glen x

MarionHalcombe Tue 08-Aug-17 23:16:54

He had a wonderful voice and smooth way of delivering a song. RIP.

Jalima1108 Tue 08-Aug-17 23:00:12

It is very rare that I shed a tear if a star or celebrity dies
But I did this evening

Thank you for the music Glen Campbell
