Wow!

This is trivial but I would like to lobby for a 'Wow' free zone.

The 'W' word has permeated even into bastions of traditional TV like 'Gardeners' World' and it is rampant in the new 'Repair Shop'. Of course, it runs riot on children's programmes but I accept that if I settle down to watch with my grand-children, my influence is limited.

Shall we soon have BBC News opening with "Wow, what a terrible day for Theresa May' or Mrs May responding to Jeremy Corbyn' latest cock-up with 'Wow!'

If 'W' turns up on 'University Challenge' or 'Only Connect' it will be the last straw. Paxman and Coren - NO!

Sorry Cunco 'wow' is part of our family life

My small GS's draw me a picture then its a 'wow' from me.
I take them or show them a new experience and it's a 'wow' from them!
WOW = World of Wonder

Cunco " Wow"has been around as far back as I can remember as a term of pleasure etc, can't you remember back to younger days when all comic books had their characters sporting the word in their comic captions along with "Zap & Kapow" so certainly not a new use of the term.

blush I use Wow all the time especially to the DGC - like CherryTrees.

I frequently comment WOW ! on photos etc. on FB.
It covers a lot IMHO surprise, delight, admiration.

I use wow all the time, but I do dislike the use of 'woucher' on that TV ad.

Well, I was obviously too poor or too uneducated to enjoy the world of 'Wow' when a small child. Mind you, I had a very happy childhood so didn't miss out at all.

I can cope with 'Wow' in small doses but it is 'Wow' overload that endangers my tranquillity. If everything is 'Wow' and 'amazing', what's left when we encounter something that is, well, slightly out of the ordinary on the upside?

If I wasn't so fair-minded, I would think there is a populist, 'Wowist' plot, supported by an unholy alliance of the biased Liberal ultras of the BBC and the swing-wing fantabulists of the Murdock press.

Fortunately, I have my feet on the ground. smile

I hate 'Wow' Can't people think of any other word? It is so boring. Even oldish people on television use it and they sound silly and affected

ninathenana Mon 03-Apr-17 14:42:51

I don't care if I sound silly and affected

As I said in my earlier post it covers a lot amazing, wonderful, clever, surprising, delight, and admiration.
I will continue to use it smile

Now as for saying something is doubly unique or uniquely beautiful angry

Far better to be upbeat and throw a few Wows about that all the doom and gloom that's about!

Ana Mon 03-Apr-17 15:03:37

Exactly, hilda, I'm afraid I can't get worked up about Wowism...

Hehe Cunco grin like aliens who come and take over Earth and implore you Join us! we will soon have you wowing all over the place,
Scene: diningroom/kitchen. OH comes in with Cunco's sausage and mash to a WOW! ?
Scene: Cunco's garden, and C spies the first pink tulip in bloom, ?and WOW!
Give in to it, we all do it now and again.smile

Roses: Your scenarios are uncannily apt! Yesterday, I presented beef and swede mash to 3 generations in our dining room but without a single 'wow'. They were all too busy eating, talking and (measured!) quaffing.

Later, my pushing 2 of the girls around the garden on a charity shop trike produced un-neighbourly loud screams (of delight) but again, no 'wow's.

I agree that it is unrealistic to expect people to give up 'wowing' but it would be nice if there were 'wow' free zones. I hope non-wowers won't be forced to stand outside in the cold with the smokers to find peace.

I heard a 'wow' on Bargain Hunt today. The item lost a fortune. There is some justice.
