Broadchurch is a very watchable and well-constructed crime drama, which I would not miss for anything. But it does, I think, raise a matter of concern.
A rape whodunnit running to many episodes has to have a fairly large number of suspects, all of whom are men. To maintain the suspense over several weeks, they all have to be seen to be capable of having committed the crime, and are shown to have various unpleasant characteristics. In the specific case of Broadchurch, three of the four key police officers are women, as are several other sympathetic characters. The male hero is a failed husband and struggling father whom his colleagues find so difficult to work with that they call him shitface.
Does this fairly reflect reality? How about some whodunnits where at least half the suspects are women?
