Excellent film I thought. It's hardly credible that it portrays such relatively recent history.
Of course the prejudice, segregation and bigotry weren't news to me but I thought it showed the day to day humiliations very powerfully.

Agree with others. Enjoyed the film and it's understated but strong message. It struck me that the two pronged prejudice has changed a lot in 50 years but still a long way to go.

Went to see Hidden Figures yesterday with DH. I have to say it's an improvement on the book which was very worthy but really didn't give an idea of the women as real people rather than idealised perfect creatures. We enjoyed it very much and DH, who started his physics career a few years later working in areas which used a great deal of computational work, said he certainly recognised the set-up of human computers and how the calculations were done, but not (thank goodness) the racial discrimination. He says they got one thing wrong though. The men from IBM were always known as 'blue suits' because that's what they wore like a uniform and you could always recognise them as such.

We commented on the way it showed the almost casual unthinking prejudice that white people had - and of course in some cases still have. DH, a few years ago, did some work in North Carolina, and I went with him for a short holiday. While he was working, I did the touristy bit and looked around a couple of small plantations. Chatting to one of the guides I asked about how black visitors reacted, and she said it was very noticeable that although the younger ones behaved much like the white visitors, the older ones would never look you in the eye.

I saw 'Hidden Figures' last night as part of 2 couples and we all thought it a great film. I agree with Grannynise. It didn't shout but it's message was loud and clear.

There were presumably fictional aspects to make the film entertaining and run us through so many emotions but it was based on the true story of these remarkable women. I see too many ordinary or bad films but now there has been 'Lion' and 'Hidden Figures' in a month. They deserve awards but whether they will get their due recognition is another thing.

I thought it was an excellent film and highlighted the total awfulness of gender and racial discrimination without being 'preachy'.

Thanks Badenkate, I'll look when I do the weekly raid on Sainsbury's.

The issue of gender was touched on during the film. What must it have been like to be female and Black, we can only begin to imagine.

I found the book in the local Sainsburys if that's any help.

I do remember reading some time ago that NASA ran a parallel astronaut training programme for women at the same time as they started one for the first men in space. Apparently they found that women were much more able to withstand the problems associated with space (no surprise there), but the women's space training was cancelled because those in power couldn't accept the results.

Even though I lived through segregation, not in the u.s but by reading and watching the news from my early teens, scenes from this film remain shocking. The idea it was acceptable to have separate washrooms, coffee pots etc for black and white staff remains hard to believe. I think we have president Obama to thank for highlighting the contribution these remarkable women made. I'll look out for the book Badenkate

Great story. Can't believe it was hidden for so long.

I'm reading the book at the moment Iam64, and looking forward to seeing the film. The prejudice at that time was unbelievable

Thank you - I will look out for that - is it on general release?

This film is about three African American women's contribution to the space programme at Nasa. That description makes it sound dull, which it certainly is not. It has a great cast and the stories of the three main characters are well and sympathetically told. I enjoyed it muchly.
