I waited excitedly all day for this , but it frustrated and made me growl "leave them alone to do it THEIR way" !! I felt the presenters were confusing, interfering , and made the very talented painters feel and look less so .
Some of the work that they were producing at home was superb .
I'll keep watching it though and see how it develops .

I enjoyed the programme, the artists did well to paint those moving animals. Jennifer's elephant was recognisable and had something about it, I cringe when she gets the hair out though.

BlueBelle Mon 27-Feb-17 09:45:55

I thought the right one won and the right one went out although I thought the young lad's was pretty poor and also David's was pretty awful I liked the muted colours that Jennifer uses but blimey talk about a one horse pony good job she's not bald

Lazigirl Mon 27-Feb-17 13:21:00

I thought the keepers choice was the most impressive painting this week, but I still like Jennifer because I think she shows originality and feeling in her painting, just wish she'd drop the hair gimmick.

Allieoxon, the Big Painting Challenge is repeated tonight on BBC4 at 8pm.

AlieOxon Mon 27-Feb-17 18:10:01

Thanks shysal !

BlueBelle Mon 27-Feb-17 18:28:07

Lazy girl I disagree I don't think Jennifer shows originality at all as all her pictures have the same methods splodge s wiped around and hair dragged around ....something original is not repeated over and over

whitewave Mon 27-Feb-17 19:08:15

I honestly was all set to poo poo Jennifer's elephant, but I think it is the first recognisable thing she's done. But saying that I think her task is far easier than attempting a life like copy done by the rest.

AlieOxon Tue 28-Feb-17 11:40:32

There were some good elephants here, weren't there? Not so many good flamingos (sp?).
I wouldn't have like to try this one.

Am i seeing something that isn't there? In Jennifer's pictures, I mean. That elephant was quite scary. I don't like the hair business, I don't get what it is supposed to do, but I feel the emotion coming out of most of her pictures, and that to me is much more difficult than a pictured resemblance.

The deaf lad is very weak I think and I am surprised he is still on the show.

As to Jennifer doing the same sort of things, the same accusation could be leveled at Monet and many other successful artists - they have a style or technique that they use a lot. I am less concerned by her repetitive technique than whether each is a good painting. I do think it is significant that 2 out of the 3 public votes have gone to her.

I assume the artist have to submit a portfolio before they are chosen to appear on this programme ?

I'm starting to wonder if they were short of applicants as I can't say I am very impressed with any of them.

Maybe I am missing something or they are better in real life than comes over on the TV.

AlieOxon Wed 01-Mar-17 10:47:30

I think they are all way out of their comfort zones!

Lazigirl Wed 01-Mar-17 18:02:35

I agree ginny.

whitewave Wed 01-Mar-17 18:08:49

I agree too. There have been other painting challenge programmes whose participants were far better.

ginny Wed 01-Mar-17 19:40:52

Just watching Portrait Painter of the Year on Sky Arts. Rather more talent on this one.

BlueBelle Wed 01-Mar-17 21:20:21

Luckygirl Monet wasn't on an 'entertainment' programme or a competition to see who is the best all round artist
I m presuming the idea if the programme is to see who can complete the various tasks to the best of their ability or else it would just be a case of draw or paint what you want each week Surely the whole point is to judge their artistic credibility by seeing how they tackle all different types of subjects If they were all to just do the same thing every week without sticking to the criteria it would be fairly boring and not make much sense However if it was a completion for abstract painting Jennifer would be fine and able to interrputate each subject in her splodge, spread, hairy way

Deedaa Wed 01-Mar-17 21:57:12

I've just been reading an article about how they choose the contestants for these competitions. Apparently as well as submitting a painting they have to do an audition to show that they can work in front of the cameras, and they do background checks to make sure they can cope with the pressure of the competition and the time limits.

I saw Camilla on Bargin Hunt (I think it was) she was a stall holder

I watched this on catchup last night. They all seem so out of their depth, especially the poor deaf chap (I would use his name but I can't spell it!!). I think it would have been a kindness to have sent him home! There were worse elephants than Camilla's, and I have to say that I was quite drawn to Jennifer's finished painting. I really think they should ban the hair though - every time she gets it out it makes me feel quite sick!

AlieOxon Sun 05-Mar-17 11:46:11

Not desperately impressed so far but will try not to miss it this week!

Bobbysgirl19 Sun 05-Mar-17 23:31:53

I quite enjoyed it tonight. Like the fact that it's new challenges every week, as it tests everyone's strengths and weaknesses.

Day6 Mon 06-Mar-17 00:45:09

I quite pitied the artists' wild life challenge. The flamingos and the elephants were difficult subject matter.

I like Jennifer's personality. She seems a lovely girl but I suspect she can't draw for toffee. I am rather annoyed that the judges pick apart honest interpretations of the subject matter, yet Jennifer's hairy, throw-paint-on-the-board abstracts get through. It's as though there are different rules for her. I did see an elephant in her work this week however. Any of the artists could do an abstract painting if the subject matter posed difficulties and they'd be scored down, yet it's as though no one will say Jennifer with her hair isn't meeting the criteria.

I was sad to see Camilla go. The stuff she does at home seems fine. I find David very pompous and conceited. He finds it hard to acknowledge constructive criticism.

Am I alone in finding the female mentor a complete waste of time? She is floundering and her advice is poor. I suspect she isn't terribly knowledgeable regarding techniques and art criticism. The man knows his stuff, but giving her a role elevated her beyond her capabilities. I hope she's been taken off the programme for good. I squirm when she offers her 'advice'.

NfkDumpling Mon 06-Mar-17 07:27:51

Surprisingly I enjoyed last nights episode. Until now I've just found it frustrating but having no knowledge or ability of portraits I learned a lot. And I think the right people were voted out and the right people praised. Really surprised that I agreed with the judges! A very difficult subject.

Greyduster Mon 06-Mar-17 08:25:08

I love the National Portrait Gallery and I am in awe of anyone who can capture a likeness of another, so I am not about to criticise. I have only once attempted a portrait. My father said it needed a number underneath as it looked like a police mug shot! I think the two who were voted off were a fair choice. At least Jennifer didn't bring the hair out this week ?!

BlueBelle Mon 06-Mar-17 09:33:29

I think the two who went were the correct two and I think Alan's painting was one of the best I think Davids self portrait was very good but not the Angela Rippon one I thought everyone made Floella look very old whereas I think in real life she looks young for her years I don't like either of the mentors I think she is a bit ineffectual and I think he's grizzly and not got any charisma I m not that keen on the judges or presenters either but I definitely liked the programme itself better last night
