Maybe a TV?

I haven't had a TV for many years but thinking of getting one. Can you help with some basics, please?
Do modern ones need an aerial? I do not want a wire thing on the (ancient) chimney.
I don't want dozens of channels, I want information rather than entertainment. I'm not paying for anything more than the licence.
So what do I aim for? It's got to be small, not one of those things the size of a cinema screen.
Is that difficult? Shall I just stick to the radio?

If you have the internet you can watch programmes on ipad or laptop
That would give you the option of looking for what interests you and then deciding if you want the expense of buying a set.

TV sets come in sizes small to large.

I'm not sure what you require to watch TV other than an aerial socket
I'm sure other GNers will be of help

BTW if you watch TV broadcasts on any device you need a TV license

If you want information rather than entertainment, then surely you can get that on line (you obviously have internet access) and on the radio?

To be honest, I'm puzzled (given what you have said in your opening post) as to why you are even asking the question confused or even hmm

For freeview TV you will need an ariel or satellite dish. It depends on a lot of factors. You will need professional advice based on your circumstances.

I agree I would go into your local TV shop and tell them what you want.

I have basic TV with built in Freeview if that is the expression, I am not interested in Sky or anything else. I have an outside ariel which in my mind was very expensive. I have a separate box for recording.

My bedroom TV I think is 32" but I have slight sight impairment or it could have been smaller.

TV's these days come with a variety of different features depending on need, so I would agree that a trip to a TV shop to get professional advice would be your best bet.

If your locality has cable TV then you wouldn't need an aerial or dish for Freeview TV, but it would need to be installed into your home from the road.

Watermeadow are you in UK. That might make a difference.

Thanks everyone.
In UK but rural, no TV shops.

Perhaps best stick to the radio or use iPad or laptop. You can get all the main TV progs, but you will need a license!
