He was also, way back when, dodgy Bruno (?) in Casualty.

Yes, her time of life and family circumstances certainly can be a key issue. On a slight change of subject, this morning on Victoria Derbyshire they were discussing scamming on online dating sites, and one lady said even though friends had warned her that she was being conned she didn't want to listen because she was enjoying ' the moment', even if her online lover was nothing more than an organised gang trying to dupe her. I suppose if you are lonely, even in a relationship, when someone thinks you are still an interesting, sexy woman it just makes you feel you are actually attractive again, and not on the rubbish dump of life.

The husband is in Unforgotten on ITV at present - he's very good. It does seem a bit far fetched but I will keep watching as the very beginning has hinted at something dark going to happen. The foot in the bucket was hilarious, DH can't stand noises like dripping taps or rattling windows and decided that would have been a complete turn off for him. Although he did wonder if such a chance would ever come his way ?

Wouldn't you want to get a room? Sex in a toilet, smelly, danger of someone coming in, so totally unromantic and sordid. He is such an oily character - what does she see in him? Made quite uncomfortable viewing. Give me Poldark being bathed by Demelza or putting her silk stockings on for her ANYDAY ! However I still found it riveting!

The boy hardly noticed her existence when she tried to buy a bottle of water after her presentation, a husband who is apparently having a liaison with a younger woman and suddenly a handsome ( yes I agree oily) bloke tempts her with charm and flirtation that 'turned her head '.

I have just watched most of this sordid little tale of not very good sex in toilets and back alleys with a horribly unattractive man - YUK not for me and it was so SLOW. If that was meant to build the sexual tension it didnt.

Must say my reaction on seeing the 'action' in the broom cupboard was, after maybe half an hour of meeting .... I must be getting old ! Foot in the bucket.... then down a probably smelly alley ... why on earth didn't they book room. Okay, so they probably wanted the added thrill of being arrested for 'something'in a public place (can't remember the actual indictment) but when you get over 60 you need something warm, candle-lit (to hide the wrinkly/droopy bits) a comfy bed... oh and a bottle of something bubbly (not shampoo or Fairy Liquid). When one starts to think about comfort over thrills one is definitely over the hill, as Queen Victoria might have said, although maybe she wasn't averse to a quick roll in the heather. I''ll be watching next Sunday, even though at the mo. I want to slap Emily Watson's character.

But, having sex for the first time, in a cupboard, with a creep who had his foot in a metal bucket, would certainly make me laugh hysterically! ?

I watched it and found the encounter in the broom cupboard rather far fetched. I wonder what Emily Davidson would have made of it.

I also much preferred the husband! I can't remember the actors name, but he's been in a lot of dramas recently.

On a plus point, I thought the chapel was beautiful! ?

For a woman of 52 she is quite naive.
Emily Watson is a good actress though, perhaps she thought playing a woman having a mid-life crisis was a good idea.

The broom cupboard bit may be alright but overall sounds boring.

Plus point : IMHO it was a good representation of the book and Emily Watson was a very good choice.
Minus point : Watching it in the company of my aged mother was awkward in the extreme!

Lona, I think you make a fair point "why would anyone go into a small broom cupboard while a strange man held the door open" I think I thought that too when I read the book, and the sex that followed ridiculous given that they had only just met for heavens sake. It was totally out of character for Emily Watson's character if I remember rightly, but books are of course more nuanced than dramas in that they give us an insight into the character's thoughts and sometimes dramas can't always convey what the book can. Hence the disappointment many a time when a good books turns out to be a disappointment on the screen.

didn't catch more than a word or two of what they were talking about in the first 10 minutes so switched it off!

I read the book a while ago, and enjoyed it. Jury is still out on the TV production tho'. The main male character's constant Dracula-like attack on the female lead's neck reminds me of mating pigeons!

I was disappointed, though I might persist into the next episode to see if it gathers momentum. I think the lack of pace in the first episode might have lost the BBC a lot of viewers already. Alternatively, I might just re-read the book.
