Anyone who saw this programme, please tell me what it was called and what channel it was on! I want to see the beginning. It was very encouraging, what I saw of it.

It was on ITV. www.itv.com/presscentre/ep1week22/secrets-growing-old

I kept thinking that it was unrepresentative - none of these impressive elderly people had mobility problems or broken bones or arthritis or any of the other stuff that many of us are battling with. One man in his 90s was beavering away at the gym doing stuff I could not hope to do.

It was good to see these old people doing so well, but poor comfort for those of us who have been less lucky at a much younger age.

I'll watch it later as I see I have to register.
I was thinking some of this, but I did feel encouraged to do better than I am!

It was quite interesting, though only representative of a few types of people.

Luckygirl The purpose of the programme was to show the possibilities and look at people in old age who had were fit well and undertaking amazing things.

Too often older people are portrayed as poor old things, 'sans teeth, sans sight, sans everything' (especially their wits). The aim of this programme was to challenge the stereotypes.

Stereotypes do tend to be based on reality and there are many elderly people with various disabilities, although only a few fortunately who have all the problems. From the reviews in the papers this mroning. The programme made some younger people sit up and challenge their acceptance of the stereotype and that I think was the purpose of the programme.

There were some very interesting points. I do like the idea that I'm only forgetting things because my brain is so full of stuff that I've learned over the years smile
