Did anybody catch this 3 part series where Benefit Claimants were given £26.000 cash in return for 'coming off benefits'. ?

There were 3 families and they were all long time benefit claimants and they struggled to think for themselves initially but by the end of the 'experiment' they had all found a sense of pride in themselves and were seemingly doing OK. They had a mentor to help keep focused and to turn to if they need reasurrence. Watching them gain self respect and actually finding they were not as they thought reliant totally on the state for their way of living was really interesting.

I particularly liked the older couple and when he finally passed his driving test I felt really chuffed for him. His wife was taking pride in her appearance and the home, got a little job and I really came to like her and her will to keep going. The couple with the bouncy castle /animal business were at the start doomed to fail in my eyes but they too were looking as though they could actually be going to make a go of it. Not sure how the other mum will do but she was canny with the money in the respect she had sufficient left and could pay her bills. She had lost belief and confidence in herself, I think they all had and regaining the strength of believing in yourself and provide for yourself was at the heart of the experiment.

I would like to see a follow up to see how they are all getting on as the 'novelty' of working for a living would have worn off but I really hope they all managed to succeed as I think they would be upset with themselves if they went back to how they were living and not feeling good about themselves.

What will happen when the money runs out and they are starving? Will they go back on benefits?

Is that 26,000.00 or 26.00?

I watched some of this. I thought the single mum was a bit optimistic about the number of jobs she was applying for. 3 a day is no where near enough. Glad that the adviser got her out giving out her CV.

Think they were all finding it hard to cope with actually paying bills. The single mum paid all hers up front for six months which is not very money saving. They all had a shock as to how difficult it is to live in real life and not benefit life.

I'd be interested to see this. Can you remember what station it was on?

book dreamer.

Channel 5 Big Benefits Handouts.. It initially received some bad press but by the last episode I was really routing for them to succeed.

It's not everybody's cup of tea I appreciate that but I didn't find it taking the mick they volunteered after all and the 'mentor' was a genuine chap in my opinion. It was a positive rather than a negative but again that is just my opinion.

Oh! As you say not everyone's cup of tea.

I saw it. POGS

I thought it was an interesting concept . I thought the idea with the most potential was the young couple . I'd have liked to have seen them given more advice on running a business because I thought they might fail but by the end you could see they might succeed.

I thought the older couple got a lot more confident especially the lady as it went on and I felt for the single Mum, I thought she was the one most likely to fail. I'd like to see a follow up a year on to see how here doing.

What came across to me was that the two married women were the ones with the most sensible heads on their shoulders .

So they won't bother then will they. confused

I saw this too. It wasn't clear to me whether the families who wanted to start a business were given any start up advice or not. I feared for them.
What was clear was that no-one wanted to go back to being on benefits and that they gained self-esteem and a bit of dignity.
I too would like to see a follow up. '
