Is Barnaby the only TV detective to have a happy home life? I can't think of another. They all seem to be devoted to their jobs but not able to cope with 'real' life. Am I wrong?

I agree, I have a few police in the family and also friends here in the Police, and they all have normal family lives.
Still to meet a Rebus in real life.

Hmm, have wracked my brains and I think your right.

Wasn't Wexford happy with his Dora, on and off screen as I recall!

I'm an ex Police wife and I'd suggest there's a high rate of divorce in the service but I can't say how many are tormented souls. It makes for good fiction/TV.

Ah, yes. Wexford of course

Just remembered, the one from 'Likely Lads' that was in the original New Tricks.
His wife had died but they'd obviously been a happy couple.

Lewis of course, even though he's now a widower...he was happy all through Morse.

And of course Lewis is happy again now.

I think wives (and husbands) get in the way of the plots so the detective is either divorced, widowed, troubled, or if the marriage is happy, the OH is bumped off.

Midsomer has to have a happily married detective because everyone else is bonkers.

Wycliffe is also happily married isn't he?

Wycliffe has rather bolshie children doesn't he? And none of his underlings seem to have very successful personal lives.

I do get tired of the idea that nobody with an important job can possibly have a happy homelife.

Thursday in Endeavour had a happy family life until his daughter unexpectedly left home.

Just remembered Lacey, of Cagney + Lacey was happy with Harvey who was very supportive. Cagney not so much. Bad choice in men. Drank too much.

It's fiction not real life.
(Not like Helen and Rob of course)

Not much more to say. confused
