I'm really rubbish at watching latest releases - I'd rather watch the ones I know I love over and over again. Here are my top 5 (in no particular order) - would love to know what other gransnetters' are? It's meant to be very cold next week and I think a few movie and hot chocolate days may be in order grin

1) The Grand Budapest Hotel
2) Casablanca - I know, predictable but it really is brilliant)
3) The Jungle Book - have plenty of excuses to watch it over again with the grandchildren
4) Braveheart
5) Slumdog Millionaire

My favourites are:- apologies if some have been mentioned before

The Jazz Singer - Neil Diamond
The Full Monty
Titanic
Little Voice
The Bodyguard

Choosing 5 was quite hard, but I prefer older films to anything new. It also depends what mood I am in.

all time favourites are:

A Man for all Seasons - watched it hundreds of times and never get bored

High Society - Grace Kelly's beautiful clothes

Singing in the Rain

Some Like it Hot

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (yes I do still go to the flics occasionally)

Just want to thank all you ladies but hope you realise you've cost me a fortune, ordering loads of your suggestions on Amazon.
I'll be just fine when the promised Arctic spell arrives, all cosied down on the sofa watching all my new DVD's.

Londongirl Sat 09-Jan-16 20:11:14

Thanks for your review, will definitely watch it tomorrow

1. Matter of life and death
2. 3 men and a baby
3. Any of the godfather films
4. Any of the rocky movies
5. This happy breed

There's more but I'd be happy to rewatch these five over and over

Must be something wrong with me. I could watch Pulp Fiction endlessly but failing miserably to put together 5 films sad. Will keep thinking.

Hattiehelga Sat 09-Jan-16 22:00:37

Shirley Valentine
Mama Mia
Calendar Girls
All Bond films
The King's Speech

Bijou Sat 09-Jan-16 22:02:33

This has been a very interesting thread as I have always been interestied in films. My father used to take me to the "pictures" every week from the age of three. Silent movies in 1926. Saw the first talkie and the first colour film. Now that I am unable to go to the cinema I have make do with DVDs and whatever is on TV.

MammaN Sat 09-Jan-16 22:05:52

Can I have the 4 Bourne films as my other 4? If so, sorted grin.

Flippie Sat 09-Jan-16 22:43:29

Airplane
Blazing saddles
The big lebowski
High society
Mama Mia
I could go on.....

Nvella Sun 10-Jan-16 00:37:02

Just remembered another one - Etre et Avoir - set in a French village school - delightful!

Pittcity Sun 10-Jan-16 08:34:33

I love Blazing Saddles and The Big Lebowski too Flippie

Are you going to see the new Rocky movie morethan2 ? I've never watched any of them but saw the trailer the other night.

Would it not be cheaper to subscribe to Netflix or similar instead of purchasing DVDs? We have pay per view movies with our TV package so it is a similar price to when we used to hire a movie from Blockbuster except you no longer have to get out of your chair.

I'll wait until the new rocky is out on DVD pittcity I do go to the cinema but only if I think a wide screen will enhance the film. I think James Bond films, action movies and westerns all warrant the expense. I don't really understand how to subscribe to Netflix or the Amazon thingy. I don't really want to subscribe to virgin or sky. Bit thick really. I'm going to look up some of the films mentioned on this thread, years of interesting film watching smile

morethan2 Sun 10-Jan-16 18:03:07

I've just watched 'atonement' on DVD it wouldn't be a favourite but it's lovely. A nice little weepy at the end...sigh lovely on a rainy evening

HannahLoisLuke Sun 10-Jan-16 19:54:54

Only five? Ok here goes

My left foot

Love Actually

Jean de Florette

Ryan's Daughter

Lamb with Liam Neeson as a priest on the run with a boy ( nothing nasty) I loved this film and have tried many times to find it on DVD.

Untouchable. French film based on true story of crippled millionaire who hires illegal immigrant as a career. Heartwarming and very funny.

The Social Network. The story of Facebook.

Silver linings Playbook , Fab film about a man with Manic depression .

The Best of Men , TV film about the Dr who changed the way we treated men who came home from WW2 with disabilities .

Lovely Molly , If you like being genuinely scared which I do !

Just a few of my favourites

maryEJB Mon 11-Jan-16 14:09:01

No-0ne has mentioned Groundhog Day! I'd also go for sleepless in Seattle, 4 weddings and a funeral, marigold hotel (first one) , Quartet, salmon fishing in the Yemen. Sorry that's 6. All but the first 2 are British. Get fed up with American ones but there are some exceptions. There are many more I could choose. We also do Love Film through Amazon and find it good though keeping list topped up is a chore, so lots of new ideas here, thanks!

Imperfect27 Mon 11-Jan-16 14:13:11

Oh my goodness ... how could I have missed Groundhog Day!!! that's the trouble .... 5 is never enough and the top 5 keep shifting! smile

Cosafina Mon 11-Jan-16 14:14:04

1. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
2. Pay It Forward
3. Dogma
4. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
