Need to get this off my chest!
Do the big chiefs at the BBC ever listen to their 'presenters' with an objective ear? I switched on Radio 2 today to give me some background musak whilst I took down and packed away the Christmas decorations. I happened upon the Elaine Page show. For ten minutes I became increasingly aghast at the dreadful delivery of her script, before I had to switch off in disgust. Clearly she was sitting there reading her script with barely a soupcon of enthusiasm and her boredom shone through the airwaves like a beacon. I kept expecting to hear a yawn as she stumbled inarticulately through her script in the most deadpan fashion. It was even possible to detect when she came to the end of a line and had to drag her eyes down to the next one.
A similar situation with the BBC news presenter Naga Munchetti (sp?)(cant spell or type the surname). She clearly hates her job and delivers her script in the same manner. i.e. "I'm bored silly, just let me get to the end of the show so I can go back to bed". She makes no attempt to mask the clearly evident problems with the autocue system. Most of the time she appears to be displaying symptoms of depression!
Some years ago I worked as a video presenter for a well known UK service company. The effort required to inject enthusiasm into every word of the script was huge. Enthusiastic delivery was of prime importance in order to engage the interest of one's potential viewing audience. BBC presenters? Jobsworths!
