Burt Bacharach-anyone watch? Incensed!

Just wondering if anyone saw the BB night on BBC4 last night? I'm a massive BB fan and lucky enough to see him live with his band earlier this year. I was really looking forward to this concert, which also included a couch-style interview with Michael Grade.

But I am absolutely incensed about the way the evening panned out. Michael Grade somehow made the great man look like a bystander; Grade constantly cut off BBs anecdotes just as they were getting interesting, he spoke to him as if he was a child, and plonked the poor 87-year old in a chair that looked as if it had no springs.

As for the "great acts"- well! To be fair, it was a big ask for a new performer to come on, engage with the audience, and produce a creditable performance of the Great One's best-known songs. None of these so-called "greats" were up to the job. Joss Stone was just about soulful enough but rather underpowered; even the jazz darling Laura Mvula was overwhelmed by the demands made on her.

All were completely outclassed by Burt himself and his band.

It was an emotional event though, and BB sometimes looked as if he was about to well up. But it could have been so much more....

Any thoughts?

I didn't see it but the critic in The Guardian thought much the same as you. Maybe Michael Grade will put his ego away next time and do the job properly?

Yes, it did look as though MG was trying to make it all about himself.....grrrrr.....probably one of the last opportunities we'll get to see BB in concert.
