Christmas ads

My thoughts exactly jingbellsfrocks. I think it's an ad that will grow on (some) people after a few watches.

But jingl if he is the man on the moon why would he be lonely? He wouldn't even know other people existed.

But he is going to feel lonely now he's been made aware of a whole new world out there that he's never going to be able to share...

Does he really blow the world up?!

Ah but he did come down once and had a very trying time of it so probably happy to look from a distance, preferably through a telescope perhaps?

What a lot of bah humbug! This won't make me shop at JL any more than I already do, but I don't mind a touch of "manipulation" if, like any fiction, it makes me think and respond emotionally. I'll get over it!
But on a more serious note, when the children grew up I made myself a promise that I would never, ever put any pressure on them to be with us for Christmas as that really is manipulation in my book.
We were "home alone" for Christmas Day only once - 6 years ago. It was wonderful! As lovely as it is to see them, being just ourselves was peace, perfect peace! And the day was full of indulgence.

IMO The worst JL ad ever!

It's made me go all Christmassy. Well, something has.

I know Iam. I seem to have completely changed my mind.

Of all the adverts out so far, I think I like the T K Maxx offering best - buy an extra present for someone near, not dear (a neighbour you don't really know). I might just do this, though I'll probably get mine from Wilko's.

Half my family is "half a world away". Last year we had a Christmas together for the first time in 9 years and the memories are stored up for the other half of my family and me to trawl over this year. We will email - my son will no doubt Facebook the link for "White Wine in the Sun" as he does every year and my daughter and I will weep over that. We will Skype on our Christmas Eve, their Christmas morning and hear about presents opened, lunch in the sun, etc. We will then have our Christmas Day and that will end with sharing the Christmas morning with my brother. My mother, who whatever we do is lonely, now so many of her friends and relatives in the same age group have gone, will be a little closer to her half of the family who are a quarter of the world away.

But I know we are the lucky ones - being able to do this. The fact that John Lewis have teamed up with Age UK to make an advert about contact at Christmas seems a good thing to me if it reminds one family to include the older "rellies" (as my DGCs would say ) .

Wow, what a huge amount of comment over an ad! Lots of condemnation and criticism of jlp, seems to me that it's an inoffensive advert, if not their best, and if it encourages people to donate to Age Concern or to consider lonely people at Christmas then it's done some good. All the companies that advertise at Christmas do so to encourage sales and very few of them wish to achieve anything else at all.

Completely unmoved by ad although puzzled by it. Bring back the Penguins!!

Lovely advert, reminds me there are,thousands of lonely people, old and young, people are right, they should be remembered all yer not just at Christmas. We will never be without adverts and yes, of course they are trying to make us spend money, no matter how the companies do it, some people will always moan, they can't do right for doing wrong.

The ad was a definite tear jerker, it has made many people think about those on there own and loneliness in the elderly is a very common problem, something we don't like to talk about especially when it's your own parents.when I mentioned to my own daughter that I felt lonely she was horrified. I live on my own and I do feel lonely but Christmas will be good I will spend time with my family but come 2016 it will be back to as it is , sitting on the moon .

I've been told that our local Age UK is getting nothing out of this ad. If there is a local John Lewis they could benefit from fundraising but there isn't one near here.

Have never forgiven John Lewis for that advert which left the dog outside in a kennel.

Pittcity, I'm not sure what Age Concern would get out of the advertisement, apart from a raised profile. It isn't like last year's JL ad where a contribution for each chocolate bar sold went to the British Legion.

I think there is a limited amount of merchandise being sold with a percentage going to the charity and there is definitely a donate button on the JL website.
The Man in the Moon is a 77 year old French actor apparently.

In that case he probably has wine, cigars and good food in his shack.

Quite sad and depressing , are they saying the little girl has a conscience or are they trying to tell us that there are lots of lonely people at Christmas , I think we`re already well aware of that ,why put him somewhere other than Earth....Oh I get it, The Man In The Moon, but he`s always smiling when we see him !! ..

Well I much prefer the Aldi advert, sorry JL how much have you paid out for that ???
