A good episode tonight. Poor old Lordy. Those Downton women are so thin that I cannot eat my tube of Smarties while I'm watching them as they make me feel guilty.

Ana Mon 09-Nov-15 20:21:18

Yes, I read that there is a film in the offing. rosequartz, you don't have to watch! grin

rosequartz Mon 09-Nov-15 20:18:59

I'm exhausted now Charleygirl - can I take any more?

Charleygirl Mon 09-Nov-15 20:14:09

rosequartz I read on line today that there may be a film made soon.

rosequartz Mon 09-Nov-15 20:06:50

Well, we have to have a happy ending, don't we nigglenellie or else we'll never watch it again!!

oh, I forgot, we can't watch it again ..... except for repeats.
(once is enough!)

nigglynellie Mon 09-Nov-15 19:15:10

I think it'll turn out that Michael wasn't killed, (mistaken identity!) and has been languishing in a German, Russian (maybe not!!) prison, and has either been freed or escaped, and will have made his way through hell fire to reach Edith and Marigold for a surprise reunion on Xmas Eve!! Incidentally, I have no rational reason for thinking this, it's just an idea!!!!!

rosequartz Mon 09-Nov-15 16:14:06

Series 5 episode 6:

Edith (Laura Carmichael) found out what happened to Michael Gregson (Charles Edwards). Edith’s editor sent a letter to say he was coming to visit. He revealed Michael Gregson was killed by Germans, and Edith had inherited Gregson’s publishing company. She was grieving, but everyone else seemed to have accepted Gregson’s fate long ago.

rosequartz Mon 09-Nov-15 16:07:51

Yes, I think they did, but it could be a case of mistaken identity. But what has he been doing? working for the secret service under cover, gone to Russia?

tanith Mon 09-Nov-15 16:04:07

Didn't they say he'd been murdered by 'Brownshirts' or some such nonsense.. i agree rosequartz I think he's been in the shower too..

rosequartz Mon 09-Nov-15 15:53:03

Maggie I think I mentioned before that he's in the shower - the same one that Bobby Ewing went in, they come out extremely clean after all that time.grin
However, I am sure I remember that there was evidence that he had died.

Yes, Edith's man was a wimp - even the suit he wore made him look wimpy, unlike Mary's straight-shouldered upright handsome mechanic.

So what about Tom?
I hope they don't try to make a romance between Edith and Tom, most unlikely, more like best pals. Please no!

They are lucky that there are any men left at all - so many women had to remain spinsters after the devastation of WW1.

gillybob Mon 09-Nov-15 15:47:36

I can't remember an episode that confirmed his death Luckgirl might have missed it though. Pinning my hopes on his return.

gillybob Mon 09-Nov-15 15:46:20

I'm with you tanith I'm hoping that little Marigolds father returns on Christmas Day to sweep Edith off her feet. She did hint last night when she said "I love you, but I have loved someone before" or words to that effect.
I agree that Mary was at her all time worst. Nasty, jealous little bitch !

Its not real, it's not real, it's not real grin

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-Nov-15 15:06:23

Ah, but plenty of characters have returned to our screens, undeterred by the minor fact that they are dead, Luckygirl! grin

Luckygirl Mon 09-Nov-15 13:49:28

He's dead Maggie.

Jane10 Mon 09-Nov-15 13:36:32

I thought there was a lot of applying 21st century thinking to the programme. Of course Edith could have just married him and not told the truth about Marigold (later maybe but would have snapped him up first). Also Mary's stance re marrying beneath her would be absolutely what was expected. The dowager going on about love didn't ring true at all. Protocol and priorities counted back then when duty counted more than soppy sentiment. Not saying that our modern thinking isn't better just out of synch for the time Downton was set in.

Bellanonna Mon 09-Nov-15 12:55:49

I think Edith could have had a lucky escape

Anniebach Mon 09-Nov-15 12:43:30

Perhaps he has been a prisoner

ninathenana Mon 09-Nov-15 12:15:00

Amnesia perhaps Maggie

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-Nov-15 12:02:26

I'd like Marigold's dad to return too. But what possible reason could they come up with for him being awol for so long?

POGS Mon 09-Nov-15 10:58:54

Well perhaps it will go out with a bang this xmas,.

We know Carson expected a 'full relationship' with Mrs Hughes perhaps the Xmas baby will be theirs. grin

Bug180 Mon 09-Nov-15 10:28:06

Yes, I think there will be another wedding and Anna's baby on Christmas Day, just wondering what to do Sunday nights now, can't stand reality stuff (get me out of here, strictly etc) , may have to search Netflix

henetha Mon 09-Nov-15 10:04:05

Oh, lovely Downton Abbey, how I will miss it. But last night's ending was a tad disappointing I thought. However, all will be resolved in the Christmas special. hopefully. I felt like throwing my slippers at Lady Mary last night though.

merlotgran Mon 09-Nov-15 10:00:20

I'm still pinning my hopes on Michael returning in the Christmas special.

tanith Mon 09-Nov-15 09:59:52

I have a inkling maybe Edith's 'old' lover (father of her daughter} will reappear from wherever he went , it wasn't ever brought to closure was it? or did I miss that bit. grin

rosesarered Mon 09-Nov-15 09:56:11

Edith's love interest was a bit of a wet blanket though anyway.Plus the sound of his Mother.......!
I think Edith may meet somebody else ( in the Christmas Downton?)
Just rewatched Alea's link to spoof Christmas Downton, almost better than the real thing!grin

Teetime Mon 09-Nov-15 09:40:46

Oh what a shame for Edith - I hope she gets her man on Christmas Day although in a way I'd rather see her become a publishing mogul ahead of her time and Mary be a bored county-set misery with an absent playboy husband!
