Mid Winter of The Spirit tonight at nine on tv.For those not in the know, based on Phil Rickmans series of books about Merrily Watkins, female vicar who works for the Hereford Diocese on anything that may be supernatural.
all good books, as are all written by Rickman.Should be worth watching.

Jaxie Don't assume anything about me please.
smile

Lona says "she yawned through Dr Foster". I can assure her that if, like me, she discovered her husband was having an affair she would find it rivetting. The hurt and the pain at the betrayal and the desire for revenge makes the whole subject one which I'm sure many women can identify with. I could tell you some of the ways I got back at the grisly German woman who was determined to take my husband, but my post would probably be deleted!

Glad I'm not the only one failing to care about Dr Foster and also that I haven't read any books by Phil Rickman, insofar as that means I had no expectations to colour my viewing of it of Midwinter which seems to be enjoyable hokum.

Thank you for telling me there are a series of books I shall go to the library and get the first one to see what its all about. Except so will everyone else. Anna Maxwell Martin played a very sympathetic role, I hope nothing nasty happens to her.

I've read all the Merrily Watkins series and hadn't noticed that they had made a TV series out of it. So I didn't watch it and don't think I will because I like to see the characters as I imagine them.

It's such a lovely part of the country and I always felt that Hereford and Herefordshire where additional characters in the stories.

Oh, am I stupid? (Don't answer).
The social worker is Lol Robinson!
Oh! I wondered where Lol was, kept waiting for him to pop up.

Gracesgran I keep meaning to visit churchyards around where my family lived to do some research, but I'm scared now ......
hmm

Saw half of it then like jing got bored.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 25-Sept-15 09:36:57

I found it very forgettable. Is there going to be any actual story to it?

I will stick with Doc Foster.

Teetime Fri 25-Sept-15 09:09:45

Yes I really enjoyed this and have dumped Dr Foster as this week's episode was TEDIOUS!!

PRINTMISS Fri 25-Sept-15 08:43:41

Haven't read any of the books, enjoyed last night's episode, but did feel that I had missed some of the story. Didn't find it particularly scary, but then I am not the scary type (I just make sure there is nothing under the bed every night!). Looking forward to how this evolves.

With his history rosesarered I don't think he could have become a social worker. I wonder if we will hear any of his music. I think there is some on Phil Rickman's site.

I hope they will do more too but Ana is right, we could have taken more time getting to know the characters.

I lived in Hereford and in an outlying village Rosequartz. One of the victims in the last novel came from that village (da, da, dah) ... and they kept going for coffee in the hotel where I had my wedding reception but only, I think in the last book smile.

rosesarered Thu 24-Sept-15 20:47:51

We will try!wink

tanith Thu 24-Sept-15 20:41:20

Thanks for the info it makes more sense now, but please can everyone NOT give things away that happen further along the line..

rosesarered Thu 24-Sept-15 20:32:58

Maybe Gomer Parry ( plant hire!) will be Chinese.

rosesarered Thu 24-Sept-15 20:31:45

Still, the books are all very good, I hope they will film more of them.

rosesarered Thu 24-Sept-15 20:30:51

Lol Robinson becomes Merrily's 'squeeze' in later books, but is not a social worker but a musician ( guitarist) and is thin and white! So a bit of a change there.Who knows what other bits of poetic licence there are.hmm

Anya Thu 24-Sept-15 19:53:44

Go and get your own stalker Ana and stop pinching mine!!

rosequartz Thu 24-Sept-15 19:50:24

ps It's because my family came from Herefordshire
hmm

Thee hast no call to take on that a way

rosequartz Thu 24-Sept-15 19:46:38

I'm going.

Inocuous hobbies beckon
(and Frank Gardner later) smile

Ana Thu 24-Sept-15 19:41:18

I thought it was me she was stalking, Anya! grin

rosequartz Thu 24-Sept-15 19:38:43

Be very afraid grin

(I hadn't noticed actually, am I?)

Anya Thu 24-Sept-15 19:36:40

Are you stalking me RoseQ ? grin

rosequartz Thu 24-Sept-15 19:34:22

I really think it would have been better to have spent the first half of the first episode giving a bit more background.

Anya Thu 24-Sept-15 19:33:41

Scared me to death as I was watching it alone in the house.

Can wait to be scared again next week.
