Did anyone else watch this last night? I am not a supporter of UKIP but do wonder whether a programme like this about one of the three main parties would have been broadcast so near an election

durhamjen Mon 23-Feb-15 22:52:49

It was the one where the woman councillor made racist comments and was sacked for it. It wasn't cynical. It followed ukippers around and interviewed them, listening to and broadcasting their real views.

I notice a programme called 'Meet the UKippers' was shown on BBC2 last night. I didn't watch it - I wonder whether it was as cynical as the Channel 4 programme.

Woman's Hour today had a whole feature on women in UKIP - when challenged about the fairness of this they said that other parties were getting coverage on the Woman's Hour website. A feature that is broadcast on the radio is more likely to make an impact.

Does that mean that everybody who said s/he will vote ukip complained?

He has got a life too.
And family.

I do not think all those human beings queuing up at food banks will agree with you, nor all those who have had their benefits stopped, or lost their homes.

"The magnanimous thing to say is that I don’t begrudge anyone a break but I am not feeling magnanimous. I do begrudge Cameron his 17th break in three years – and his second one this month. It was odd enough to go off to Portugal with the Ukrainian situation far from resolved and Gaza under bombardment. But to go on a second holiday to Cornwall days later while “the most serious threat to Britain’s security” – and those are his words – flares up and our forces get involved in a quasi-military support role, is profoundly worrying. Especially in conjunction with a newly promoted foreign secretary who has been in that post little more than a month."

Obviously going off to Cornwall at this time is far more important than bothering about "the most serious threat to Britain's security".

So will I, not just David Cameron but any Prime Minister who snatches a few days off with his family. I prefer my politicians to be human beings.

POGS Sat 21-Feb-15 18:25:18

Yes I will.

trisher Sat 21-Feb-15 11:17:44

Yes I read it durhamjen and if i was in his constituency I would be asking lots of questions and trying to hold him to account. Mind you I wouldn't have voted for him in the first place! Anyone want to stick up for him and say he deserves his holiday(s)?

durhamjen Fri 20-Feb-15 22:25:04

Did you read the link about Cameron, trisher? He wasn't in his constituency. He was definitely on holiday.

I wouldn't mind having a politician's pension after 5 years, either, Eloethan.

Eloethan Fri 20-Feb-15 15:20:46

It would be great if non-politicians could do their jobs badly but have up to five years' grace before they are sacked.

trisher Fri 20-Feb-15 15:13:06

Strictly speaking durhamjen it isn't classed as holidays. When parliament isn't sitting MPs are supposed to be out and about in their constituency, talking to voters and adressing any problems thay may have. If an MP isn't doing what they are supposed to be doing then you can vote them out at the next election.

Why do MPs get school holidays, and more, when they criticise teachers for having long holidays?

trisher Fri 20-Feb-15 10:47:10

Firstly this was strictly speaking fiction in that it is highly unlikely that there will be a UKIP government at any time in the near future. One of the comments refers to the "three main parties" UKIP is not a main party although the amount of publicity it gets you would imagine it was. As for the programme itself, it wasn't brilliant, but I actually thought it was pretty restrained about the consequences of UKIP policies. There has always been a strong radical movement in this country. When right-wing parties attempted to gain a foothold here in the 1930s the left rallied, and opposed them. I hope, and believe, this would happen again if ever UKIP did come to power.

POGS Fri 20-Feb-15 10:24:42

Are your schools not on holiday in some parts of the country then?

Gracesgran Fri 20-Feb-15 09:09:54

Why is there no PMQs today? Have they gone on holiday again?

The House of Commons basically "sits" using a calendar closely associated with the Public Schools most of them went to, Jen smile

feetlebaum Fri 20-Feb-15 08:50:57

Victoria Ayling, Ukip candidate for Great Grimsby, during a public debate asked the question:

"What happens when renewable energy runs out?"

Duh...

The House of Commons will be in recess from Friday 13 February . The House will next sit on Monday 23 February 2015.

Thought you would have known that, durhamjen!

Elegran Wed 18-Feb-15 12:35:01

Childrens's half-term - they're all "spending time with their families" ? (or mistresses)

durhamjen Wed 18-Feb-15 12:21:06

Why is there no PMQs today? Have they gone on holiday again?

Soutra Wed 18-Feb-15 09:56:12

Sorry - should have been DM

Soutra Wed 18-Feb-15 09:55:40

The thing is that under the old legislation, before fixed term parliaments, I do not think that it would have counted as so near an Election. The devil of the current situation is that we are being bombarded with Election stuff for four months. Everything seems to count as "electioneering" and is fair game.
Trust the DMS to raise another hare!

NfkDumpling Wed 18-Feb-15 06:54:28

Only watched the first ten minutes or so and, having just happened on it and not read or seen any introductions to it, was completely confused as to whether it was fact, fiction or anti UKIP propaganda. So switched off.

It does seem to me that both UKIP and the Greens are getting the three main parties and the media in a bit of a tiz. Their equilibriums have been quite upset!
