I remember being unsure at the end of the first series, and I am already slightly confused following tonight's episode. However, I was really looking forward to it, so I hope I shall be able to keep up. I need subtitles to help me!
What did others think of it so far?

I thought the prosecuting counsel was appointed or instructed by the CPS. The CPS may not be able to afford her services and may not appoint her !

Yes, which one is the brother-in-law who owned the boat (memory .....)?

Tegan - I'm with you in feeling suspicious of the vicar. I suppose we're supposed to be suspicious of everyone.

It's great to see Charlotte Rampling, a great addition to a good cast. I don't think the family are employing her, wouldn't the CPS usually identify the best qualified barrister as lead prosecutor. She was suggested by the junior counsel who had acted as prosecutor until the surprise NG plea.

Ana Tue 06-Jan-15 16:43:07

It seemed to me that the parents were just trying to persuade Charlotte Rampling to take the case after their lawyer had failed to convince her to come out of retirement.

Lilygran Tue 06-Jan-15 16:38:19

Should the family of the victim be employing the prosecuting counsel? I'm also pleased to see Charlotte Rampling!

Are we all losing our marbles? Was it so very complicated? We recorded it to watch as we don't like ads getting in the way of drama, so will watch it tonight.

Excellent - the makers have cleverly managed to crank up the tension right from the outset, can't wait for episode 2.

Tegan Tue 06-Jan-15 16:27:06

I seem to recall not trusting the vicar in the last series shock. Surely, if the alleged murderer isn't guilty after all he would have protested his innocence more in the last series [not that I remember much about it]. Good to see Charlotte Rampling back on screen, though.

i just wish they would all speak more clearly. They need lessons from Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench and all the stars on the old New Tricks. No problems there!

Mishap Tue 06-Jan-15 13:43:49

Oh - thanks for the idea of Digital Spy - that was brilliant.

Lona Tue 06-Jan-15 13:35:25

It's easier to keep up with the plot lines if you read the critiques on Digital Spy or the DM or indeed any online newspaper. They have the facts and explain the plot lines quite well I find.

Mishap Tue 06-Jan-15 13:31:01

And Miller (in the ITV catchup clip - for which many thanks) said the burning boat belonged to her "ex-brother-in-law" - who he? - and what was the significance of the boat to the plot? - I cannot remember.

Thank goodness I have Gnetters to help me with all this!

"NHS letter (now stolen by the man accused of abducting two girls in David Tennant's previous case, when this man broke into DT's house" - I missed that - was it in the first episode of the new series?

rosequartz Tue 06-Jan-15 12:48:21

Sorry: so the NHS letter was his. (DT's)

rosequartz Tue 06-Jan-15 12:46:55

I would have liked a repeat of one or two of the previous episodes to catch up.

Yes, it was David Tennant who had been having 'funny turns' in the last series so the NHS letter (now stolen by the man accused of abducting two girls in David Tennant's previous case, when this man broke into DT's house). I think the case collapsed in court, so DT has been hiding the wife of this man because she gave evidence against him, but he has now tracked her down.

There was a mystery about this previous case of DT's in the last series which has now been brought to the fore. Confusing or what!
I think that's it anyway.

Miller has been working and presumably living over the border in Devon until after the trial of her husband. Her older son is staying with someone in Broadchurch - didn't quite get who.

Here is a 4 minute catch-up from series 1. I had forgotten the burningboat.

Told you I wasn't paying that much attention!

glammanana Tue 06-Jan-15 12:25:18

Brilliant acting and a series which seems to going to have lots of twists and turns as it goes on,well worth watching now I have pieced the story together, was a bit lost at the start though.

Ana Tue 06-Jan-15 12:12:36

I would guess that Miller either asked to be transferred or had been advised to stay away from Broadchurch until her husband had been sentenced.

She did say she'd been hoping to be able to go back home and rebuild her life, despite the looks and the gossip, after he'd been sent down.

Mishap Tue 06-Jan-15 11:58:26

I am a bit puzzled as to why Miller has been relegated to a traffic cop. She did nothing wrong as far as I remember.

The scriptwriters obviously had a second series in mind from the beginning as you can now see how they were already setting up the new story lines.

It is a bit disturbing that both "cases" are child murders.

Is Miller's husband going to get off on some technicality? - hope not, as that always seems a real cop-out.

Lilygran Tue 06-Jan-15 11:33:11

There was something wrong with him at the beginning of the first series, lots of hints, but never anything definite. If I remember it right!

Ana Tue 06-Jan-15 11:18:55

The hospital letter was to David Tennant - we saw him open it early on in last night's episode. During the last series he kept having funny turns and actually collapsed once but we still don't know what's wrong with him.

Greyduster Tue 06-Jan-15 11:11:07

I didn't get the hospital appointment thing at first (but to be honest wasn't paying that much attention). Then it would seem that it was not relevant to the plot but just a bit of business to indicate that Miller is now seemingly relegated to traffic duty and, being a bit bitter and twisted, was taking it out on Joe Motorist. Hence her colleague's comment about it being usual to give a bit more latitude rather than giving him a ticket.

Have been stuck at home with a chest infection for the last few days so was pleased to have dd's boxset of the last series. I watched the whole lot over 4 days and was ready to enjoy 2nd series. That was an excellent plan as everything was fresh in my mind and I was able to jump right into it!
I agree we now have something to look forward to on Mondays.

Charleygirl Tue 06-Jan-15 09:43:25

I could not remember what had happened in the last episode like Eloethan, and it took me ages to get to grips with what was going on. I also did not understand why the paper with hospital tests on it was being waved about and I have not got a clue about the witness protection from his last case. More may unfold next week.

rubylady Tue 06-Jan-15 01:58:40

Thanks Tegan I'll check tomorrow. I'm off to bed though now as back at PDSA with doggie and her ear in morning. Nice to know someone else is up late though. Night night. smile
