Esio Trot

We enjoyed Esio Trot, The Boy in the Dress, Mapp and Lucia and were glad that Miranda and Gary were married in the end! Another eccentric Christmas offering we liked was Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death.

Now we are eagerly awaiting Broadchurch Two.

I was bored stiff with Esio Trott. I've never been a huge fan of Dustin Hoffman, and I thought Judy Dench was wasted. I did enjoy Quartet. Nice to see Tom Courteney on screen, and so many veteran musicians getting a shout in it, especially Dame Gwyneth Jones, an exceptional Wagnerian singer in her day and always a joy to listen to.

I agree PRINTMISS, whilst I find Miranda Hart very likeable and she does raise a laugh, I can't help thinking the humour in her programme is completely ridiculous and quite infantile a lot of the time, maybe as you say it's a good time to call it quits.

Someone mentioned 'Miranda' I am so pleased she has given up on her show. It was becoming so silly, and I think she has more to offer than that. A wise woman to decide when to leave.

I didn't hold out much hope for Esio Trot but decided to watch as I'm a huge fan of Dustin Hoffman. I'm not keen on Dahl and I suppose this sort of story could be described as "magical realism" (?) which, again, I don't like much - but I thought the whole thing was beautifully produced and very enjoyable.

What a lovely place the film Quartet was set in - I couldn't quite understand why anyone would be upset at spending their final years in such fantastic surroundings and among people with whom they shared a common love of music.

Much as I admire many of the actors who over the years have been given honours, I think the whole system is absolutely ridiculous - why honour someone for being lucky enough to forge a career doing something they love and for which they are amply rewarded? For the majority of actors, just having the opportunity to get some acting work would be reward enough.

Quite good, a bit whimsical, I watched it because I absolutely adore Judi Dench, a national treasure if ever there was one and Dustin Hoffman wonderful too, as he spends a lot of time in the UK, perhaps we could bestow that title on him as well.

Yes kind of agree with you Jane 10 about James Corden, some writer mooted the fact that he should also be regarded as a national treasure. As you say he is indeed very ubiquitous and I think he has a way to go before he assumes that mantle. I saw him on stage in "One Man Two Governors" a while back and although he was very good I don't think he justifies some of the accolades he receives. He still remains, in my humble opinion, a mouthy show off.

I don't feel the same about his former partner and co star, Sheridan Smith, a sublime talent and wonderful actress worthy of all the praise she receives.

There has been some very good comedy. Especially Miranda.

Oh dear! I had been looking forward to this and persevered for half an hour but gave up. I found it so slow and boring. Without the narrator -I can't stand the ubiquitous James Corden anyway -it might have been better? Glad everyone else enjoyed it though. Takes all sorts. I've really enjoyed the TV offerings this year.

'Enders last night was fantastic!

We watched The Nativity (actually on CBBC!) one day on catch-up. Really enjoyed that. Martin Freeman and Ashley Jensen in it. Hadn't seen that before.

I enjoyed it, classic Dahl with Dench and Hoffman, what's not to like. Like others, I've found the Christmas offerings on tv in the main absolutely dire. I don't watch a lot of tv but during this extended lazy holiday a good drama or film would have been welcome.

As you say jinglebelsfrocks certainly not all day. I think they just gave everyone the day off but I would rather have had a variety of repeats than that.

Esio Trot was a joy to watch, which makes a very pleasant change after all the rubbish the t.v. companies have put on over the festive season. Thank goodness we had some decent films on disc we could watch, but Esio must be the best piece of television for a long time I think. Super acting with a simple story. Great

Yes! We thoroughly enjoyed The Help.

So many repeats. There was no respite.

Don't get me started on Christmas telly this year, jingl Utterly dire. The only thing I enjoyed was The Help last night.

I thought it was awful. Can't stand Roald Dahl.

Almost as bad as that Mappa and Lucia thing.

A bit disappointed that the Beeb didn't come up with any really good drama over the holiday.

Much better than I anticipated and beautifully acted. It brought a tear to my eye !

I though it was brilliantly done and so gentle. With two such actors it had to be pretty good but what a beautiful written and clever story.
