Thank you for the Days

I'd forgotten that one! Now singing away (in my head) grin

Love the Kinks. We still go to see Ray Davies when he comes to Birmingham. He is a great performer and has the place singing along to all the oldies including Waterloo Sunset, Thank you for the Days and everyone up dancing to the likes of Lola smile
I loved the Small Faces too when I was a mod (or thought I was) smile

Rosequartz - You've got a Friend - I was going to mention that one too.
There was a radio series ?last year? about this kind of song, and that one was mentioned.
Also Summertime, I like this version:

Some of those singers I never liked much when I was younger are growing on me as I get older!
I used to think Dire Straits were absolutely dire (a friend loved them) but I quite enjoy listening to the occasional number of theirs now.

Actually, come to think of it, I wasn't that young in the 80s!

Did anyone like Roy Oribison? I'd never really listened to his songs but one that stuck in my mind all these years was I Drove All Night - he'd got a good voice!

rosequartz Thu 23-Oct-14 14:14:12

I love it even more when DD2 sings 'You've got a friend'! smile

Eloethan - I didn't know he'd died and, as you have said, so far from home, very sad indeed. He did some lovely songs didn't he.

Ana Thu 23-Oct-14 13:27:13

Oh, I absolutely love Carole King. Almost all of her songs - she wrote so many! (and probably still is...)

rosequartz Thu 23-Oct-14 13:23:35

HollyDaze I spent a very boring summer once going out with a boy who loved both Mr Tambourine Man and cricket. Was heartily sick of all three by September.

Oh, there's a great song - Carole King and It Might as Well Rain until September - and You've Got a Friend.

Never a fan of Gene Pitney, but someone pointed out to me how mesmerising his face was. I watched him sing 'Someone gotta hold of my heart' and realised what she meant. Beautiful song, that.

Hollydaze I was a great fan of Gene Pitney and went to see him in Ipswich with two of my school friends when he was on tour in about 1965.

He was found dead in a Cardiff hotel a few years ago, apparently of a massive heart attack. I thought it was so sad that he'd died so far away from his home and family.

Anyone remember Flowers in the Rain? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMG8xW2HrAM

What about Lazy Sunday Afternoon? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv41AgQTlrA

a rooty dooty doo a rooty dooty di-day - ah, they don't write lyrics like that anymore grin

Ana Wed 22-Oct-14 20:51:04

Oh, the Walker Brothers...swoon! grin

HollyDaze Wed 22-Oct-14 20:43:46

Memories flooding back! I used to love Mr Tambourine Man and The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore. Remember Gene Pitney? Cheesy songs but I loved those as well grin

Or even Itchycoo...

Tegan Wed 22-Oct-14 20:11:54

Whod've thought psychadelic Status Quo back then would turn into the rockers that they are now! I can still listen to Small Faces stuff. In fact, I don't have many 'best of' cd's but the ones I do have are The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Yardbirds [my favourites] and blush The Shadows. Need a quick blast of Ithycoo Park now.

janeainsworth Wed 22-Oct-14 19:52:43

Oh, so many. I liked instrumentals, On the Rebound , Walk Don't Run, Perfidia, FBI.
Then there was Concrete and Clay, Groovy Kind of Love, Road Runner, The Tracks of My Tears.
'Our' song though is Charles Trenet singing La Mer......[romantic emoticon]
I have all these in my phone and when I'm reduced to sitting in an armchair all day gazing out of the window, will listen to them and relive my youth grin

HollyDaze Wed 22-Oct-14 19:33:39

Itchycoo Park (Small Faces) and Pictures of Matchstick Men

That takes me back - two of my favourite songs at the time (I still quite like them).

Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks as well.

KatyK Wed 22-Oct-14 10:12:03

All these lovely memories smile

Every time I see your name, rosesarered, I get an earworm of that song by Ronnie Carroll! grin

whenim64 Tue 21-Oct-14 21:16:50

roses my DiL walked up to stand beside my son to 'At Last' at the start of their recent wedding. It was so fantastic, we all burst into spontaneous applause. A wonderful song!

rosesarered Tue 21-Oct-14 21:12:46

At Last By Etta James. Magic!

whitewave Tue 21-Oct-14 20:10:51

Baker Street being played today for obvious reasons is one but honestly there are absolutely loads that I love, from the 30's thru to about the early 90's I suppose. I seem to have stopped listening to popular music after that.

Now that I have mentioned Edith Piaf, No Regrets is one of my favourite oldies. Also, so many from that era that my parents listened to and I grew up with. This prompted me to buy a 4 disc. CD called The Memory Lingers On. Very nostalgic.
