Is anyone else as excited as I am for the new series tonight? I have heard that they've got the oldest and youngest contestants to date... should be interesting!!

I agree with you Merlotgran Jordan was the right choice in a way I`ll miss his enthusiasm and sense of fun. Norman bakes well but he is much to conservative come on Norman be a bit adventurous.

Love Extra Slice

merlotgran Wed 20-Aug-14 22:55:35

I think it was right that Jordan went tonight although I'm sure he'll be very entertaining on 'Extra Slice'

Norman had a lucky escape. I don't think Paul Hollywood likes him.

I've been wondering how you were today jingl, hope you are better in time for your holiday.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Aug-14 19:27:29

Thanks Merlot. Daughter came and cooked me a dinner. Feeling better already. smile

merlotgran Thu 14-Aug-14 19:17:28

Get well soon, jingl wine flowers

I was once at a Ladies meeting (don't ask!) and some young women behind me were talking about what they were going to make for the weekend.

True story.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Aug-14 17:26:04

Merlot grin (I am in bed poorly at the moment and would so much rather be out shopping - anywhere!

Elegran a hand mixer is much the best for cakes and icings. The Chef is excellent for the pastries at Xmas. smile

ginny Thu 14-Aug-14 17:01:02

Well jinglbellsfrocks I bake regularly and cook most meals from scratch. I don't drink alcohol and I'm not sure what 'class' I am. The only mixer I have is a £4.99 hand held from Tesco which is about 10 years old.
But, I thoroughly enjoy GBBO. So there. grin

sparkygran Thu 14-Aug-14 14:33:54

I have a Kenwood have had it for years but oh I loved my Sunbeam mixer it was the best.

I too thought Jordan should have gone but on reflection the guy who did go OMG senility is creeping upon me can`t remember his name and it was on only last night anyway his baking looked lovely but very simple no whizz bang wallop to it.

Could we start a campaign to bring back Watercolour Challenge?

merlotgran Thu 14-Aug-14 14:17:26

Your post has made me chuckle, jingl. I wish I'd read it before I went shopping then I'd have had a closer look at everyone in Aldi to see if I could spot the wine sozzled, middle class owners of KitchenAids. grin

Elegran Thu 14-Aug-14 14:12:32

Really? I used to make lots of cake when my children were young - it was cheaper than buying sweets for a treat, and I knew what went into them. That was before I had saved enough from my part-time job to buy a Kenwood Chef. After that I didn't need to beat the mixture by hand, as my mother had done too when she made cakes when I was young.

They didn't taste any better from the Chef, though. No-one needs a mixer to make cakes.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Aug-14 13:46:59

really

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Aug-14 13:46:33

Yes. It's the ones who can afford fancy machines that this "Bake-off" appeals to. Your over-fed, winme sozzled middle classes.

No danger of the low paid being encouraged into eating cake. Not the ones who can "really" only afford to shop at Aldi.

whitewave Thu 14-Aug-14 11:10:41

I have changed my mind - I am going to save for one.

Crow Thu 14-Aug-14 09:59:05

I love my Kitchenaid and regularly use it, even though there are only two of us at home. I mainly make bread with it although I do make cakes and biscuits but not too often as we eat them!!!!!!
However when family or friends visit it is in constant use.

NfkDumpling Thu 14-Aug-14 08:49:56

I made Mary Berry's Florentines a week or so ago and thought they'd come out wrong because of the frilly edges ..... Now I know I got them right! Dead chuffed!

(DS loves cooking and is a sucker for gadgets, bought himself a Kitchenaid as a treat and has passed his old Kenwood on to me. I think Kitchenaids are wonderful!!)

shysal Thu 14-Aug-14 08:47:31

I also think that Jordan should have gone. They seemed to only judge on the show stopper instead of all 3 sessions.

I am another who would love to see the return of Watercolour Challenge.

ginny Thu 14-Aug-14 08:39:29

I have agreed with the judges verdicts so far. Also enjoying 'Extra slice'. and agree Claire seems lovely.

Would also like to see a comeback of water colour challenge.

merlotgran Wed 13-Aug-14 21:24:59

Really high standard tonight considering it's only week 2 but I think Jordan should have gone.

Richard, the builder, has got to be one of the favourites to win.

Those Kenwoods are pricey, too. Look at this one, which is on a par with my KitchenAid. £499!

WBundecided Mon 11-Aug-14 10:27:21

I have got a Kitchenaid and love it! I leave it out on the worktop because it is too heavy to heave in and out of a cupboard. I use it a lot and it doesnt take a lot of washing up, just the bowl and whichever mixer tool I use. It is expensive, but a one off purchase, and very well enigineered.

whenim64 Mon 11-Aug-14 10:12:45

Crikey! I've just looked at the price! Mine was about £230, so a couple of hundred pounds less than they are now, and I got a free set of kitchen tools valued at about £50 with it. I wonder if GBBO has contributed to the high price?

whenim64 Mon 11-Aug-14 10:03:14

I've got a KitchenAid Artisan, whitewave. The almond coloured one. I bought it a few years ago and it's a real workhorse. I make bread with it several times a week, and keep it on the worktop ready to use. I got it because it suits my farmhouse style kitchen and very modern appliances look out of place. The grandchildren like it because they can see what's going on in the glass bowl when we're making cakes and whipping up egg whites. My friend has the Kenwood, which is equally good and seems to be just as sturdy.
