Is anyone else as excited as I am for the new series tonight? I have heard that they've got the oldest and youngest contestants to date... should be interesting!!

All that cream made me feel more than slightly nauseous!

No wonder, anno. Did you watch it three times? grin

I thought some of the concoctions looked awful last night - not at all appealing like they usually are. Still love watching it, though.

Anyone familiar with Morrisons would have recognised the green cake as a Morrisons Festival Cake that I confess is my most favourite cake ever. Slushy cream, custard, melt in the mouth spongy layers and yummy (green) marzipan.

KatyK Thu 11-Sept-14 10:41:10

I don't normally watch Bake Off but watched some of it last night. I said to DH 'oh look we've had one of those cakes from Morrisons' smile and I agree gilly, they are scrummy.

J52 Thu 11-Sept-14 17:15:08

I have just made Paul Holywood's pear pie! I will not bother again! I stuck (literally!) to the recipe.
They looked ok, I will put a photo on soon as I can.
The syrup is extremely sticky, on me, the cooker, the floor and welded to the jug and cooking tray!
The syrup also leaked out of the pears when cooked.
The taste was of pear and pastry, nothing special? Maybe that's just me.
I shall make a straightforward pear flan in future! If I ever get rid of all that sticky!!

Could face all that cream stuff last night, either. X

Perhaps I am being cynical but I felt all that "We couldn't decide between them " from Mary and Paul was rather staged. They needed to have a week with nobody leaving to balance the series or they'd be an episode short. I think if Diana hadn't left, they would have decided all right! smile

Ana Thu 11-Sept-14 19:35:37

I thought the same, Purpledaffodil! It would have been too obvious to do it last week.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 11-Sept-14 20:18:03

Quoting Gracesgran:

"^Yes. It's the ones who can afford fancy machines that this "Bake-off" appeals to. Your over-fed, winme sozzled middle classes^.

I think that statement says more about the maker of it than those who enjoy cooking and baking and like to invest in their hobby."

grin Nah. Not over fed at the mo. (been on diet for couple of months) and rarely drink. just a miserable old bugger [grin ]

You could have edited out my typo there! hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 11-Sept-14 20:18:21

Sorry! As you were!

Purpledaffodil Thu 11-Sept-14 22:07:38

Glad I'm not the only cynic Ana grin

annodomini Thu 11-Sept-14 22:44:48

I have just realised that the reason for my occasional repeat posts is that I have been a bit heavy handed with the 'Ctrl+Enter' way of posting.

annodomini Thu 11-Sept-14 22:45:07

A light touch worked that time.

Nelliemoser Thu 11-Sept-14 22:47:11

The princess cake looked far too sickly for my taste. The savarins were a different matter though.

Deedaa Thu 11-Sept-14 23:34:55

DH wants me to make the Princess Cake - I think this says more about him than it does about the cake grin

Did anyone see Mary Berry on WDYTYA tonight?
She cried at the idea of her forebears being in the workhouse. And she actually looked at both sides of her family, not just one person.
It was very interesting. Will not spoil it any more for those who have recorded it.

papaoscar Fri 12-Sept-14 06:16:31

A paricularly sad experience for Mary Berry, DJen, which reminded me how truly awful social conditions were for many ordinary people in the not-so-old days. An absolute disgrace, callous and cruel treatment by the authorities of the times, which we should never forget.

NfkDumpling Fri 12-Sept-14 07:01:43

It was a really good programme. Interesting about the workhouse. Recently workhouses have been portrayed in a better light and I expect some were. But the Norwich one was particularly awful.

whenim64 Fri 12-Sept-14 07:25:29

A really interesting programme and how fascinating to learn that the forebear who put his family into the workhouse was made to pay for their upkeep.

gillybob Fri 12-Sept-14 07:29:40

If you have a Morrisons near you Deeda just go and buy one and stick a little pink rose in the top of their "festival cake" exactly the same, and quite delicious.

durhamjen Sat 13-Sept-14 01:19:09

I have just found out that the flat I was thinking of buying in the village was originally part of the workhouse. They were the cottage homes for children in the grounds. What is now the library was the Union office.

Now I need to look at the inmates. I have been in a workhouse without knowing it. It was the children's ward in the hospital when I was five.

Deedaa Sat 13-Sept-14 23:43:13

I might just do that gillybob DH doesn't mind a "bought" cake as long as he keeps his sugar levels up grin

shysal Thu 18-Sept-14 16:27:03

Just read that Mary Berry's M&S bomber jacket shown last night has sold out today! I wasn't keen on that one, but some of her more fitted jackets suit her, I think.
The Bake-Off is a close run thing now, all being of similar ability, not sure who will win.

Ana Thu 18-Sept-14 16:30:10

Not sure about the jacket - I certainly wouldn't wear it, but it kind of suited Mary.

I couldn't help noticing that she was wearing false nails last night though - hope she doesn't when she's cooking! shock
