Prince [the one who sings]

Did anyone watch the documentary about Prince last night? I just wondered because I've never 'got' Prince. OK; it's not my kind of music anyway but I can still usually appreciate other forms of music and see why they're so good. Is anyone a fan? The songs that he has written that have been performed by other people are great, Nothing Compares to You, for example. But I don't like his stuff [it all sounds the same].

Yes, I saw it (I love those late night music programmes) and I feel exactly the same. I've never 'got' Prince, either, and thought maybe the programme would enlighten me. It didn't! I wonder if he'll be one of those that I'll like when he's older. I never got Tom Jones and cringed at his performances years ago, but now I think he's great - he's changed and so have I.

DS1 in his teens was the biggest Prince fan and I have to say I couldn't stand that so-called music. Once, when I was away with DS2 in Spain, and exH was supposed to be keeping an eye on DS1 (17), he went off to a gig in London and slept on Victoria Station! I sometimes wonder what he'll say if any of his kids pull that one!

We had a lovely French student stay years ago and she had the same sort of taste that we had and she and her family raved about him. When they said 'Purple Rain' was an incredible song I listened to it and couldn't make out a tune of any kind. I agree about Tom Jones. It was his son who changed his image wasn't it; told him to get rid of the black dye and sing different songs. Robert Plant, also, when he joined up with Alison Krauss and then moved on to world music. But Prince, who they said constantly reinvents himself, always looks and sounds like, well, Prince in a time warp. Even his rap music didn't sound like rap music. [glad it's not just me]. Going to do a bit of utubing to see if I can find anything of his that I like. I could be gone some time.......hmm...

When we moved north, I gave DS1 the choice of decor for his bedroom and yes - you've guessed it - purple, which, in 1985, didn't figure on the colour charts and had to be specially mixed for him.

'Raspberry Beret' is good, Tegan. Try that one smile

.....or 'Little Red Corvette' - that's ok, too.

Thanks for the tip, when. I found a version of Raspberry Beret that I liked but, again it was a cover version.

I never 'got' him either. Although now I come to think of it, I like quite a lot of his songs - Raspberry Beret, Little Red Corvette and Party like it's 1999.

Not many unforgettable songs from someone that has made 30 albums though. And, unlike Nil Rodgers, other musicians when interviewed in programmes don't rave on about how he has influenced them. Johnny Marr even called his son, Nil.

Always loved him. He's a musicale genius. Bought a CD of his not so long ago. Been away for a couple of days, what channel was it on.

BBC4; will probably be repeated during the week [the Friday night programmes usually are; I'll check].

Anno reminds me of the time DS went to Plymouth with a friend to see Metallica (I think!) and ended up trying to walk back to Truro! They gave up in the end and slept in a bus shelter till the first one arrived in the morning grin
