Maybe this should be in Pedants' Corner but we tend to become familiar with daft new phrases and expressions thanks to radio and TV. Jamie Oliver can hold his hand up for many of them.

I've just heard DH remark, scornfully, 'That's NOT a Bad Boy, moron, It's a CUCUMBER.'

Not so long ago Jamie Oliver was referring to MR. Carrot and MR. Potato....Oh dear. hmm

Nobody does this in real life.....Do they?

Bringing closure for the family - after a murder case etc

Thinking outside the box - who thinks inside a box

I have a window next Monday - curtains drawn for six days ?

You have been on a journey - grrrrrrrrrr

'Forward planning' Can you plan backwards?

Flowerofthewest Mon 21-Oct-13 23:11:24

Ace!

Wicked

Sick - meaning great for goodness sake!

I hate the overuse of the word 'passion'. Just read in a jewellers window 'diamonds are our passion'. The word gets used a great deal in job adverts - 'Are you passionate about customer service?'

Deedaa Mon 21-Oct-13 22:34:14

Has anyone mentioned Going Forward?

My mother used to go insane if she heard me saying "these ones" merlot she got me out of it eventually.

I have been known to thank someone for a heads up now and again - sorry blush

Just watching Tom Kerridge on BBC2. Not only is he cooking a joint of beef Bad Boy for Sunday lunch, he doesn't know that you marinATE the meat in a marinADE. thlangry

'Giving the heads up' - being afore warned, I think

Flowerofthewest Mon 21-Oct-13 18:34:33

I admit I do like the guy word, it covers everyone! not for inanimate objects though, agree there.

group hug!

merlotgran Mon 21-Oct-13 13:29:56

Why is everyone and everything a guy?

"I'll just put these guys over here" - referring to a punnet of strawberries.

Even worse is 'these ones'.

janthea Mon 21-Oct-13 13:21:56

How about 'reaching out', 'group together'. Claiming that things are 'iconic' when they are clearly not!

Flowerofthewest Sun 20-Oct-13 23:28:38

What you on?

give it some welly (that may be an old one but heard a lot on TV etc)

Aka Sun 20-Oct-13 23:24:21

Nice to touch base moon

Flowerofthewest Sun 20-Oct-13 23:04:05

I am ashamed to say that I used this one in an earlier post 'In the loop'

Thinking outside the box, who's flippin' box?

Very common it may be wisewoman but very annoying, especially when used by older people (probably watched Neighbours the first time around)

Aka Sun 20-Oct-13 22:48:58

Yes, you got your mojo back (fingers down throat emoticon)

merlotgran Sun 20-Oct-13 22:02:35

Be proud of yourself, Deeda. You've made it your own and you've nailed it.

Deedaa Sun 20-Oct-13 21:55:47

OK I'm coming on here for my Nan! It's been a roller coaster journey but I've taken ownership of this post and I'm giving it 110% ! (You'll have to imagine the raised inflection cos I can't type it) grin

wisewoman Sun 20-Oct-13 19:04:16

Apparently that is called the AIE - Australian Inquisitive Ending! Heard that from Steven Fry on the radio. It seems to be very common nowadays.

Flowerofthewest Sun 20-Oct-13 18:18:08

'can I get a coffee?' grrrrrr!

and the perpetual way of talking raising the voice at the end of a sentence as if it were a question. Drives me potty.

wisewoman Sun 20-Oct-13 16:01:30

Yes, it is the constant use of "journey" for everything from baking a cake, singing a song, winning a competition and even dealing with a serious illness. It drives me nuts.

gracesmum Sun 20-Oct-13 15:48:26

.....about which I am passionate.....

Ana Sun 20-Oct-13 15:36:22

...of emotions....

merlotgran Sun 20-Oct-13 15:09:03

Oh yes, KatyK, the journey - which usually involves a rollercoaster somewhere along the way.

hebrideanlady Sun 20-Oct-13 15:07:38

merlotgran I think your DH is so right to have pointed out something, which I find very irritating to say the least.

Flowerofthewest Sun 20-Oct-13 14:43:08

WASSSSUP!!!!!

Whatever!!!!

Loser!

KatyK Sun 20-Oct-13 14:34:49

You've been on such a journey
