Blue Peter

Does anyone else remember a Blue Peter appeal, around 1959 -ish, poss in conjunction with RSPCA, where they were appealing for new homes for homeless dogs? We definitely got one, and called him Sandy. My father was a soldier and was at the barracks, my mum at work as a cleaner. Two men in a van, came with the dog to my school, and I was allowed home with them to take the dog in. Luckily, my mother was at home by this time. Don't think this would happen now, I was only about 6 at the time!! But I can't find anyone else who remembers this, they just think I'm delusional!
