Good Evening of Telly Viewing

I am so amazed that I had to mention this on here. I am a great one for watching detective stories and these together with the News make up my entire television watching. Tonight, however, I started to watch a documentary on Malta in 1942. Followed this up with The Edinburgh Festival and rounded it up with The Hairy Bikers' take on the Industrial Revolution.

My attention was held for the whole evening and it was only ruined by Janet Street Porter in room 101.

I watched none of those, but I did record the Hairy Bikers. I enjoyed The Mill, Dragons' Den (tear jerker) and Big brother blush .

I have always thought The Mill, etc would not be my scene but maybe given last night's watching I should think again.

I wasn't attracted by anything on offer, so I watched a recording of Sherlock, and then ran a DVD - The Strange World of Gurney Slade - and then caught the last twenty minutes of the Hairy Bikers programme.

Shysal's evening would have had me retching quietly in a corner until they came to take me away... :-)

The clunkingly awful dialogue of The White Queen has a strange hypnotic quality for me. In Shakespeare a couple of minor lords etc. dash through the exposition, and the leading characters then say or do something interesting. In The WQ everything is exposition, but perhaps that is necessary because narrative history is no longer taught (oops, wrong thread!).

If I had been young Henry Tudor I would have grown so fed up with my mother banging on at me about becoming King of England (on very shaky grounds) I would probably have cleared off and done something else.

The White Queen herself did so much loud whispering last night that I kept wanting to clear my throat.

Shysal we had 'Dragons' Den' on while we caught up with the papers - tear jerker is exactly it. Look out for Bare Naked Foods. grin

I think The Mill is getting better and better [after a slow start] although I'm surprised at some of the things that happen in it prior to 9 pm confused.

LizG - I've been looking for the Malta programme - which channel was it on?

I'm enjoying The Mill, too. I watched it an hour later last night, but forgot and thought it was after the watershed. One quite graphic sexual scene shouldn't have been aired that early, although I guess not many younger children would be very interested in this drama. Still...........

Big Brother!? Flinch. Like watching paint dry and not very good quality paint either! Each to their own I suppose.

We are currently hooked on Top of the Lake and we are ploughing through the box set of Breaking Bad (not released here but a "cult favourite"). The main actors are brilliant, and the writing always of a high quality.

Tegan Mon 12-Aug-13 14:51:07

Heard good reports of Breaking Bad. There are so many series I need to watch; I've never even seen The Sopranos blush. I'm really looking forward to the last episode of TOTL; I'm glad I stuck with it now.

I love the Hairy Bikers. We've been to two of their live theatre shows. Good fun.

Watched Mr and Mrs for a bit of light hearted fun, then Law and Order, that was all they could offer for me last night.

mrshat Mon 12-Aug-13 17:36:09

'The Mill followed by 'Law and Order' both very enjoyable while DH struggled with 'The White Queen' (he will not be beaten!) grin

glammanana Mon 12-Aug-13 18:31:57

I'm enjoying The Mill after a slow dark start and always watch Law & Order it has become a favourite even the re-runs of earlier episodes on ITV3,apart from that nothing on really of interest last night.

Marelli it was on BBC 2 yesterday at and I think it was called The Battle of Malta or something similar.

Marelli Mon 12-Aug-13 20:54:35

Found it LizG! We're in Scotland - it's on Wednesday here - thank you! smile
