Anyone watching this? A bit confusing I find, seems to do too much of too little, too quickly, but perhaps it's me

It had a good write up but, for me it's too close to what happened in Cumbria so I didn't want to watch it for that reason.

No I found it a little confusing and jumping to before and after the event was very difficult to figure also the main character Stephen was difficult to understand I almost gave up after the first one but OH was watching it too so we persevered, I'll carry on but I'm not at all sure who everyone is and I'm thinking it will have an ending that doesn't explain much. Having said all that most of the acting is great I just can't understand what Stephen is saying half the time..

Marelli Tue 06-Aug-13 16:54:12

I've been watching it, but like everyone, I'm rather confused. It goes back and forth too much. Who was lying at the front of the house when the social worker/carer arrived at the when Stephen's mother was found? confused Too many 'whens' - sorry!

I have only watched the first episode but recorded the second. I have no idea what was going on and I thought that it was just me, a bit befuddled, but maybe not. I will watch the recorded episode and then decide whether to continue next weekend or not.

I had to put the sub titles on. Will watch second episode that I've recorded but am a bit befuddled.

I watched the second episode this evening and I will not bother with any more. Diction did not have high priority, I had problems understanding what most of the characters said.

Used subtitles but found jumps in time confusing

I see a folk here using sub-titles, and speaking to a some friends most of them seem to find it necessary these days, and not everyone is hard of hearing is I am. We all decided that speach on TV is becoming more indistinct, and everyone seems to have too much to say in too shorter-space of time, even the news-readers!

Very confusing, the one word name title put me in mind of Broadchurch, and although I knew the storyline was very different, I was hoping for something of that calibre, no such luck. I don't mind slow burners, I'm really enjoying Top of the Lake, but the first episode of this didn't engage me at all so I don't intend to watch the rest, life's too short.

KatyK Tue 13-Aug-13 13:20:44

I have just caught up with this as I thought it would be good. I have to admit I could hardly understand or hear a word anyone was saying and I am not remotely hard of hearing. Relieved to find from the posts above that it wasn't just me.

Marelli Tue 13-Aug-13 13:23:50

Feel the same - managed to understand it a bit better at the start, but the other night's episode had me struggling.

PRINTMISS Mon 19-Aug-13 08:02:35

Iam quite sure I must have missed an episode of this, because I did not understand any of the final episode. I have absolutely no idea what the story was all about, and in the end who was who. Was it just me?

vegasmags Mon 19-Aug-13 08:09:09

You are most definitely not alone PRINTMISS. Although it had good reviews in some quarters ie the Guardian, I thought it was dreadful. I agree with all the other posters who have complained about the incomprehensible diction. I found that the bits of the story I could understand were dripping with clichés - the hardened reported back in his home town, the gaga granny and so on. We deserve better than this!

Eloethan Mon 19-Aug-13 11:26:07

I missed an episode but think that anyway it was very confusing - and unremittingly depressing. Yet another serial that I've watched and wondered afterwards why I bothered. Ditto The Returned.

Too many loose ends, I felt that I was watching a gloomy Swedish mystery without the sub-titles. I am non the wiser now than I was at the beginning. And that nipple piercing - omg

tattynan Fri 23-Aug-13 12:26:52

The final episode answered no questions that had been posed in the earlier episodes eg what was the childhood connection between the shooter and the journalist?, was the shooter still alive?, Who really was the childhood bully? It just seemed to fizzle out of story. Some good actors poorly served by the script.
