Wishful Drinking (Carrie Fisher)

Did anyone else watch Carrie Fisher on Sky last night? It's her one woman show (great title) about growing up as the daughter or Eddie Fisher and Liz Taylor - she doesn't dwell on the addiction side of things, thankfully, it was more about growing up in Hollywood etc. She is very funny, but clearly damaged by years of overindulgence. I felt sorry for her - she sold her soul at such a young age to the Star Wars franchise without realising what she was letting herself in for. She must have driven Paul Simon mad for the time they were together (or so it seems from the song lyrics she quotes in the show). www.hbo.com/documentaries/wishful-drinking/index.html

Also bipolar as well I think [?]. Fascinating, funny, intelligent woman. Don't have Sky but would like to have seen it. Forgot she was married to Paul Simon. Someone great to know but awful to be married to, I would imagine

Yes Crimson she is bipolar. She comes across as an intelligent, wise, self-aware woman but above all she is witty. "I have ECT but nowadays medication cuts out the convulsions, so you could just say I had ET last week. And given my Star Wars background you could be forgiven for thinking that means I sh*gged an alien".

She had a best selling book as well I think.

I read Postcards from the Edge many years ago - quite harrowing in places, but very witty and readable.

Isn't Debbie Reynolds Carrie Fisher's mother Grannyknot? Debbie Reynolds appears to be quite volatile and odd, each time I have seen her being interviewed. Not a very steady parent for her daughter, unfortunately.

I saw this programme last night. It was very interesting as well as entertaining.
What a survivor, although she says she does not like being called a survivor. I did not realise that she had written Postcards from the Edge. I saw that recently, it think it was on Netflix. It was very good.

Yes Liz Taylor was her step mother and the divorce was quite harrowing I think. No wonder Carrie became such a complex character.

Yes Debbie Reynolds is her mother. And her dad of course was Eddie Fisher, the divorce was harrowing at the time, because they were 'the nation's sweethearts'. Eddie left her mother for Elizabeth Taylor, after Liz's then husband (and Fisher's best friend) Mike Todd died in a plane crash. Debbie Reynolds definitely seems a bit peculiar, although her daughter speaks fondly of her. It's a good show ... she really has had one hell of a life, not least the fact that she doesn't own her image as Princess Leia (due to the Star Wars franchise) so she has no control over what is published or done with that. There is even a Princess Leia blow up sex doll.
