Did any one else watch Bertie and Dickie? This film was about the 1948 London Olympics when Bert Bushnell and Dickie Burnell won the gold medal against all odds, having only known each other for 5 weeks.
They truly were great olympians. The 1948 Olympics were set in times of austerity, only being 3 years after the end of WW2.
The men lived at home, and food was rationed. There were no fanfares and fireworks.
It was so interesting to watch as both men struggled to come to terms with their fathers, stiff upper lip and all that.
I knew that they were going to win but I still wept at the end of the film.
Has today's Olympics got lost somewhere in the ceremony? I don't know.
My son and his family are going to see the rowing next week. I am sure they will be excited by it and hopefully the grandchildren will have good memories for a long time after.

I saw that. It was great!

Loved the bit at the end, where it said a 73 year old man had won gold - for the etching class! grin

I thought it was overly sentimental, but both the S.O. were blinking a lot and blowing our noses at the end. Very difficult to do a drama of something when everyone knows the end, but they did it very well. Imagine todays athletes eating spam!

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and saw some of the 1948 Olympics at the 'pics'. It wasn't obviously as lush as it is today, but I do remember the excitement and telling my mum I would watch it next time round, and being told that it would never come to England again, so I would probably never see another Olympics - travelling abroad in order to do that was unthinkable at that time.
I had not realised it was something that only happened every four years, and staged by different countries. I am obvously not going to go to the Olympics this time round, but I shall certainly see more than enough on television I think.

I enjoyed the play..some good actors, It did make me think how hideously and unhealthily competitive the Olympics has become... not just for the athletes but the competing nations , there are political issues involved ( as it showed when Atlee decided to go ahead rather than letting USA host them).

If it was possible a limit to the expenses competitors could spend on training and equipment and on actually putting on the games it might get back into proportion. What are your thoughts on financial contributions from competing countries based on the numbers on the national team to the country hosting the games?? Possible/fair/unfair/stupid?

It would be lovely if it could be all about the SPORT, TAKING PART, and the joy of WINNING if you are good enough, but I doubt that will ever happen again, because I think perhaps we have gone too far down the money/political roads.
