Archers too dull....

I read that the Archers are to get more dramatic storylines ..become more like Eastenders...what do any Archers fans out there think?

merlotgran Thu 07-Jun-12 19:58:27

Nooooo. It can be a bit twee at times but it's a million miles from Eastenders thank goodness. Real life isn't full of constant drama. I love looking at the Archers messageboard on Sunday evenings. Some of the regulars who post on there are really funny and know how to send up some of the more pompous characters.

I agree merlot but think it is on the cards! I think that soaps are a contributory factor to the dramas people make of their own lives.... they have begun to believe the dramatic life on the Square or Street is how their lives should be!

I gave up watching soaps a few years ago. I used to love Corrie but how many murders can one street take? It's safer to live in Midsomer.

Its been a bit boringly safe lately. No-one has to die but its time for another fling, surely?Wasn't Ruth and Sam's the last or was it Brian and Shi...(don 't know how to spell it!)

I definitely dont want anything let alone The archers to be like eastenders which would benefit form a large bomb -BUT The Archers is as dull as ditchwater at the moment and I have listened for over thirty years.(DH is a big fan)

Hunt Fri 08-Jun-12 10:11:34

Wasn't its original remit''an EVERYDAY story of country folk'' ?

Annobel Fri 08-Jun-12 10:24:01

I listen to TA very rarely but if I happen to catch an episode, it usually sounds much the same as one I might have heard weeks previously. Time to throw a juicy affair into the mix?

AlisonMA Fri 08-Jun-12 10:41:33

Please leave it alone. I have no idea what the TV soaps are like as I don't watch them but the Archers is not boring, listen to the subtext and guess what is going to happen. I'm with Hunt and I like all the subtle nuances, I don't need drama rammed down my throat all the time.

I'm an archer and I'm not boring. Not bored either.

Jacey Fri 08-Jun-12 10:56:33

Sorry ...but for me, the signature tune is enough for me to switch off the radio!! wink

nanaej Fri 08-Jun-12 11:59:15

I listen to TA regularly but not always daily! yes you can pick up story lines without having to have recorded it whilst away but it has dealt with 'everyday' issues without them being tabloidised (is that a new word?).
State vs private education, organic vs super farms, jubilee vs republicans, access to grandchildren, 'mixed' marriages, gay love .... in fact quite a lot of things GNs discuss!! they just do it in a calmer and more realistic way than Walford and Corrie!

gracesmum Fri 08-Jun-12 12:57:38

I saw the thread titile and thought "No change there then!" What I love about the Archers is that you can miss weeks, if not years and then switch it on and there will be Ruth saying "Deeaaaaaavid" or Clarrie going "Oh Eddie!" that's what give our life stability!! grin

AlisonMA Fri 08-Jun-12 13:06:05

nanaej I like tabloidised

My parents listened to The Archers from the time it started until they died and, brought up on The Archers, I continued listening, or rather I did. Because I turned it off after the 60th anniversary edition and I havent listened since. No, I didn't give a toss that Nigel Pargiter had been killed. The reason was that throughout the previous month R4 had been full of interminable trails telling us that some major life and community changing event was going to take place, something otherwise unknown in the history of the Archers etc etc. My money was on Helen's baby being very seriously disabled, an issue never raised or featured before or Ian, whose back story includes a bad attack of broodiness and who was really involved in the preparations for the expected baby, having a short term or long term wobble and leaving Adam for Helen.

But when the great day arrived all we got was another sudden death, the plot following Sid Perks sudden death still being a key plot line and we had to believe that pregnancy neurotic, obsessive Helen not only didnt know the signs of pre-eclampsia, neither she or her mother had ever heard of it and that strained credulity to breaking point. I had such a strong feeling of being let down by the banality of the events after all the hype that I havent listened to the programme since.

So those of you looking forward to or dreading new excitements in the programme dont worry this new script-editor's idea of new dark plotlines probably includes, someone damaging Jo's pony trap, and Jack Woolley dieing.

Just heard on Feedback that its all a mistake, he didn't mean it, his Mum would kill him if he changed anything. Now we can all relax grin

Well thank goodness for that; what would my Sunday mornings be without the omnibus!
I don't find it in the least boring - though I do sometimes hear the dumpty dumpty dumpty dump and realise that I have fallen asleep and missed half of it. What I do find boring is all the claptrap drama in the TV soaps.

specki4eyes Fri 08-Jun-12 23:29:52

nanaej I quite agree with you - soap dramas encourage real life ones. My life is like a freakin' soap opera at the moment and that's caused by someone who loves to watch Big Brother. I rest my case.

The Archers? Yawn........ Switch on once a blue moon - same drivel.

specki4eyes Sat 09-Jun-12 22:07:45

oops looks like I've buried another thread..sorry!

Learnergran Sun 10-Jun-12 08:46:30

You had help from me, Specki!
Off now for a little nap before the omnibus..........
