You mentioned how they have a trip just for gays which is interesting as there are two gay chaps who live next to me and often go to Malpalmos; if I’ve spelt the place correctly.

We lived just north of those dunes for a while (in San Agustin), some 20 years ago.

The first time I walked across them was certainly an eyopener.

But the next time was hilarious: walking immediately ahead of me was an English couple, obviously first-timers who hadn't been warned of what to expect. Their expressions, the looks of disbelief that kept passing between them, as well as their comments that I could hear were priceless. 😄

Canaries are amazing especially in the winter months

In 2025 we went to Lanzarote in February and the weather was mixed. Out of seven days we had two days of rain. This year we went to Tenerife beginning of March. All seven days were lovely with some high cloud. The day we were going back the heavens opened, it turned cold and it flooded everywhere as the rain was heavy for a week. It was on the news here. You can never be 100% sure of the weather.

We go to the south of Fueteventura (Morro Jable) every Christmas or New Year - as it's the island furthest south in the Canaries - and it's usually beautiful and we love that mid-winter sun.

Talking about Maspalomas by the way. 😉

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the canaries. Hope to visit in Feb

Did you walk near the dunes. We did but had no idea it was famous for swingers! 🤣 when we got home I looked it up and there are 3 different areas - one for gays, one for straights and one for anything goes. I am not kidding, there were videos of it on YouTube which even made me embarrassed.

Should be warm in February.
All the Canary Islands can be very windy. Great sand dunes at Las Palomas.

Grand Canaria is also supposed to be the hottest Canary Island.
But do look after your valuable possessions,passport and money.
etc.
Gran Canaria has a real reputation for pick pockets. If you are in a hotel. Definitely get a room safe.

We are going to Gran Canaria in January.

Last year we went to an extreme nice all-inclusive in Lanzarote walking distance to both beach and a very nice small harbour.

Weather was lovely, not too hot. Food was fabulous.

Understand Gran Canaria is slightly prettier than Lanzarote and we have a 1 bedroomed AirB&B, overlooking the beach and a short walk from bars etc.

Iworked in Lanzarote in January, February and March and the weather was dismal half the time, so I assume it can be luck whether the weather is nice. Personally I didn't like Lanzarote, I thought it was devoid of character, but I worked in Puerto Del Carmen which was all drag bars, curry houses and Burger Bars, other parts of the island may be nicer.

Playa Blanca in Lanzarote is lovely especially in February.

We had lovely weather each time we’ve been in GC in January 24-25 degrees daytime but 18-20ish in evening so needed a cardi/light jacket. No rain.

Mrsmeldrew my daughter went in February and was very disappointed it rained quite a bit and she needed a jumper, not what she’d been told to expect

We go to Fuerteventura over the winter for 4-5 weeks as the weather is so much better than UK. Last year was the worst winter in 20+ years but I was still in the shirt, crops and flip flops just needed a light cover up on the evenings. We love Fuerteventura because its a different landscape, quieter than the other island with a relaxed laid back feel. Canaries are a good choice for winter sunshine and warmth. We don't go AI as its lovely to try the local cafes/bars/restaurants as there is ore choice and prices are great especially theore :spanish" places.

Lanzarote February 2025 was positively chilly. 17 degrees and windy. One day it rained all day. So this year we went to Sharm El Sheikh for a week in February. A pleasant 23 degrees.

We stayed just east of Maspalomas three years ago in February. It was about 20 degrees, warm on the south facing patio of our Air B, not very warm after a swim in the sea. Sunny most days. Perfect for walking. We hired a car and it was an easy drive from the airport. Most of the good walks were in the interior mountains, lovely but quite challenging driving, narrow winding roads and loads of cyclists. Apparently its a magnet for those who want to cycle up and down precipitous roads. I dont know why anyone would want to do that, but loads of people clearly did!

We went to Tenerife in late January this year. Temp about 18-20° C- warm
enough for summer dresses and sandals etc, and sitting out in the warm sunshine, sunscreen required.
Would highly recommend it- although coming back to cold and rain 10 days later isn’t recommended 😂

I have actually never been but a close friend had a holiday there in February for years and said it was quieter and still really warm

Glad to be helpful Grannyjacq1 it's hard to ignore the news now, the implications of climate change and El Nino are everywhere from authoritative sources including the Met Office today.

I’ve been in February, and I agree, go to Puerto Mogan, or Meloneras if you want a big hotel. The south is much warmer than the north at that time of year, we went to Las Palmas for the day on a trip when a festival was on, and I had to go and buy a coat for my little daughter, as it was so cold there.

Gran Canaria is fantastic in February compared with Britain, but the temperature can fluctuate.
If you do go, don't go without a thick cardigan or a jacket, just in case, or be prepared to buy one there if necessary.

Thanks for all your comments - plenty of helpful advice and encouragement to go ahead and do some more research. Also interesting to read about the potential 'El Nino' effect: I guess that will impact many holiday destinations in Europe - and other places next year and beyond. I wonder how many people living in the UK would have booked holidays abroad this summer, if they had known how hot it would be here? And how it would be even hotter in mainland Europe. With the current political situation too, booking holidays in advance is becoming a minefield!

Perfect for winter holidays. We stayed there in early March and it was lovely.

In the early 50s my Uncle built some of the first hotels out there. It was not commercialised at all then. He and his brother had a building business and moved their families out there for several years. Two of my cousins were born out there. When they returned to Ireland they named their house Las Palmas.
