Irrespective of the rules there are 62 days in 2 months which is how long the OP is staying for.

Yes if you have a lot of luggage then moveing around is not for you. I traveled around India for two months quite happily with 15kg of luggage. Could have gone for longer but the visa ran out.

Book your flights and first weeks accommodation on one of the larger islands, research which ones you would like to visit. As long as you are not high season you can book ferries and accommodation as you need and decide to move on. Most islands have fairly good bus services now so you can travel around without driving. There are ferrys between the island. Stay a week or two on one and then move to another. Book air B&B as you go along. Book extra air B&B when the kids want to pop over.
